Aligning ALL columns in the center and width of box

From the default screen layout and the default welcome page: has anyone tried to give the left, middle, and right columns fixed widths and align all of them center on the screen? So let's say that the columns are:

 

Width of screen: i.e. 1024

Width of columns

LEFT MIDDLE RIGHT

125 500 125

 

So the screen width will vary but all 3 columns are centered on the screen. Any ideas?

 

My other question is how to prevent the data/text in the boxes from wrapping. I'd like to keep the categories and other text like "contact us" from wrapping in their individual boxes.
