Do not want expanding sub catagory, category.php

I saw this message from a post from last year with no resolve, I am looking to do the same thing. Thank you. Clint

I do not want the catagory to expand, only show in the main page as they do. The reason for this is that I have hundreds of sub catagories that will only lead to confusion for the customer. The list is a mile long when fully expanded. I have played with catagories.php for a few hours and have not figured out what I need to do.

There is a contribution that only shows the top catergories, i think its called top categories but im not sure!
