hi.

I was interested in setting up online store using OSC and have been looking into it for quite a while. I found a Canadian(I live in there) webhost who offers oscommerce hosting.

Since I know nothing about HTML or prgramming/coding, I asked them

about it and they said they'll charge US$80/hour for design change

and 125/hour for functionality/coding change. That's quite a lot I thought.

Well...I don't have much to spend so I was wondering, is it even

plausible for someone like me building online store by myself using

OSC? How steep would running curve be? I would be willing to spend

6months to 1 year if I can do it by myself but...I have no idea If I could

do it or it would be a futile attempt and waste of time. :(

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd recommend having a go yourself. It will be more rewarding and a lot cheaper. With some hard work you can get more or less everything done yourself (with the help of the community) and then get a pro in to finish off things that you find too difficult.

Some webhosts offer an auto install of oscommerce which would mean all you would have to do would simply make any changes to the graphics and layout. Clearly by paying a proffesional you would end up with an all together better looking site unless you are willing to spend the time learning how to code etc... In saying that however i have very limited knowledge of code and have managed to make some basic changes :? .

The web designers charges however in my opinion seem like the standard rate. Why not ask around for a quote on doing the entire site rather than their hourly wage?

Hope this was some help, feel like i rambled

You could also make a post in the Seeking Commercial Help forum and get an idea of what the cost would be to utilize the services of an experienced developer.

If you are willing to learn and enjoy a challenge, I suggest doing it yourself. Open a page in the catalog folder and walk through it. When you come across a command that does not make sense to you, research it in the PHP Manual and/or MySQL Manual.

Yeah, I think those rates are reasonably fair, though I've seen them for half as much.

I think that you'll find that you can easily set up the default shop. For a novice, layout changes will be a little more difficult, and functionality changes will be a whole lot more difficult.

Depends on what you want to try to do.

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.

Few tips on gettign a web designer:

1.Don't pay more than half up front

2. Try and get someone that is highly recommend (by someone you know if possible)

3. Ask to see sites they have made before.

4. Try and make them say a set price for the job before they start.

*edit - do not solicit on these forums* - Johnson

Good luck and hope the site goes well :)

I know a hosting compagny who charge $20 a month to host a OSCOMMERCE already setup for you and $40 /H for your custom web site as you want it. If interessed [PM XpressY].

XpressY
