I have downloaded the osCommerce program,

Purchased my domain and have webspace available etc,

BUT I cant get the program to install.

I have copied relevant files wit WSFTP to the root path and can get to the os Commerce welcome screen but no further.

I just get error messages !!!!!

Step 1: Database Import

A test connection made to the database was NOT successful.

The error message returned is:

Unknown MySQL Server Host 'db1.janus.internode.on.net' (0)

Please click on the Back graphic to review your database server settings.

If you require help with your database server settings, please consult your hosting company.

Yes I have consulted my host company.

As they do not know the program the can't help me with what to put in the boxes!!!!!! :?: :?:

PLEASE>>>> Does anyone out there have any suggestions on where I can find these answers

Generally the server host is localhost

The install normally fills in most of the info you need except for database server, database name and password, which you have when you created the database.

Thanks Craig.

It did the auto fill bit no problems but it is the database bit I can't get right.

Not a good feeling when the first Q i get asked I am completely stumped on.

Hi Calico.

Your hosting company is the one to ask about your database info, it's not localhost because you are on another server, then fill in the info they give you. Ask them about database server, database name, user name and password.

Usually the hosting company has allready created the database and named it so you still only nead to ask them for the details to it. But if you have your own server and database you can read the wiki as The_Bear gave you a link to.

Coupla things.

For mine, it looks like this:

webserver root directory: '/home/4cottons ' where 4cottons is my username.

For the webserver and catalog directories, the unpacking could foul you up. The package unpacks differently than what the default install wants and the default install doesn't want it the way it thinks it does. Got it? You should see the default settings of:

webserver catalog directory: /catalog/

webserver admin tool directory: /catalog/admin/

Thats not how the package unpacks and not how the default wants it. The default install wants /admin/ out of the catalog directory.

I set mine up in root so my settings look like this:

webserver catalog directory: /

webserver admin tool directory: /admin/

www catalog directory: /

www admin tool directory: /admin/

Database server (this took me some guessing): localhost:www.4cottons.com

You may have to guess differently.

Username: (ftp login name) mine is '4cottons'

password: secret of course

database name is your username PLUS the database name with an underscore separating them,

mine is: 4cottons_iowa where 'iowa' is the database name. Make sure you have created the database PRIOR to attempting installation.

hope this helps

Sorry, I made a few mistakes.

The username is the login username plus an underscore and the username you must add to the database. So if I add a username 'ippi' to database 'iowa' then the settings would be as such:

username: 4cottons_ippi

password: ippi's password

database: 4cottons_iowa

sorry.

Now you are talking about localhost, your own server ? and the database on the same server.

If you are a paying customer on a host somewhere you don't usually make your own database because the host make the database and usually the webserver and databaseserver is on 2 different servers.

So you need the database server name (like mine is innodb.xxxxxx.com) and the host has namned the database after their own rules like xxxxxx_innodb1 and the login username and password for it is different than username and password for the webbserver where the files is, and for security reason it makes sence.

So the easiest way is to just ask the host for the details for the database, and they don't need any knowledge about osC.

Then just follow the instructions on the installation procedure. The new release of osC works great and there is no reason to move admin folder away from where it is when you unpack the files, but for security reason you should move admin folder and rename it to something else but installation works fine in the structure the files and folders are orginially.

btw the installation made the paths to the folders right by it self even after that I renamed them before I installed osC.

Wow guys,

You have all been very busy while I have been sleeping.

it is a new day here and I am going to give it another try.

Starting out optimistic.

I guess a lot of my problems are non familiarity with all the terms used.

I have very very basic computer knowledge.

Also the website? Has a lot of folders/directories allready that I am meant to use that do not match what osCommerce wants. :?

I have

cgi-bin

data

html

include

logs

I can only work within these folders/directories.

I cannot change their names etc

Is "localhost" a generic term, or is it the term I should actually be typing in?

Yari, Thanks for your assistance here. :D

I am a paying customer with a host company. I have sent emails, Urgent emails, phone calls etc and rec'd nothing back.

GooseEgg (cute name) :D

I will work through what you have suggested.

it makes a lot more sense to me now.

Here goes another day.

Cheers all

Rosalie

If I was not a paid up customer I would be elsewhere by now.

Type in "localhost" its a generic server thing.

The folders you list are just folders the host needs to make your website work. The cgi-bin is used to hold perl and cgi programs and they can generally only run from there. The other stuff, like HTML and LOGS folders makes me think that you have access to web-based administration of your site. IE can you point your browser to an online file manager or anything? And if you can, do you MySQL access?

My host is ipowerweb and I can make numerous databases through MySQL and name them whatever I want. I would certainly look around to see what you have access to.

If they refuse to respond to you, I would get my money back for the web space, the domain registration fee is non-refundable, and transfer the domain to another host. Thats a very easy thing to do.

Hi Calico.

Yes we have been busy when you was sleeping  What hosting company do you have ?

Hi Yari.

Another new day!!!

I signed with a company called Internode

I live in Adelaide, and wanted to try to support "Local business" so signed with a local, reputable? company. Hmmmmmm :x

They are still not responding to my emails or returning my calls so I think today may be spent sitting in their front office.

They may take some notice that way.

Maybe local has its advantages.. :?

You guessed it.

Still getting nowhere and no help

Aarrghhhh.

Hi Calico.

You can't do much before you have the details for your database, so good luck :D Let us know how it goes.

Ha! Yari is right, the directory is right. I was struggling with setting up a secure store with an existing install of the snapshot version of oscommerce. In the process, I fubar'd the install. So I just loaded the new version, much simpler.

Great it worked to install osC for you goosegg :D I tried the privious version of osC and I remember the installation could make some misstakes on the paths, but in this version the installation works just fine, thank's to the developers
