Guest Posted July 20, 2003 Posted July 20, 2003 Say I wanted to duplicate the products offered in one OsCommerce shop at one url to another on a different url entirely. are there some files I can copy to do this easily or would I have to just suck up and enter each product one by one by hand?
blueline Posted July 20, 2003 Posted July 20, 2003 All you really have to do, assuming that you are using the same version of osC on both sites, is backup the database that currently holds all of your products, and populate the new database with those values. Chris Sullivan
Guest Posted July 20, 2003 Posted July 20, 2003 Thanks. :) so after I populate the product list on this site I will back up that database immediately and save it for later on when I make the next website.
Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 New question along these lines... What would be the best way to copy all the modified files? Do a fresh install and then replace the files I had modified? Or could I just download the files from one site and upload to the other changing of course database info etc. ? Both stores will be the same essentially just on different urls, one dot come and the other dot net. The design will likely vary too.
Mr. Ree Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 What would be the best way to copy all the modified files? Do a fresh install and then replace the files I had modified? Short answer is yes. Do a new install, back up the database files that contain the categories and product information from the original store, restore these files in the new store database. My question tho.. why build and maintain TWO shops with the same basic products? If one is a .com and the other a .net, just have the .net address parked on the the .com site so they both end up at the same place giving just one set of data to administrate. Looks like you are just getting started, if you will send me a pm I will mentor you a bit to help a fellow Texan out. I have two sites, different names, using the same set of data for customers and products. Works well for me. Regards, Mr. Ree How to find answers to OSC Common Questions 1. Regards, Well the reason is because of the special nature of why I set up these stores. Each site will operate seperately from the other even though they will offer the same items for purchase. I am sort of just getting started. I have set up OsCommerce now several times but never quite for a situation like this. :) I noticed your avatar... That is one of my most favorite shows and I seldom watch anything on TV. :) Thanks for the answer though. That is what I will do then when I work on the second one. It will save me a bunch of time and that is always a good thing. :) Once it is spent it doesn't come back... best to use it wisely in the first place.
Mr. Ree Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 OK, I got it. Still then the best way to populate the new store with the same products is like I said above, you just need to make sure the version of the stores are the same. If it helps, I can get Dale Dribble to give you a hand. Mr. Ree How to find answers to OSC Common Questions 1. Look at http://wiki.oscommerce.com 2. Search http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/ 3. Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 Hmm that might be cool but I would maybe rather have John Redcorn to come give me a hand ;) *ducks*
