how to show main categories on main page

can any of you tell me how to configure my shop to show main categories with images on main site?

 

i was all over the contributions site and i found Main Categories v1.0b, but this isn't what i wanted...

 

here are the examples how i would like it to look:

I am also wanting to know how to do this. I tried the Main Categories v1.0b contribution too, but it seemed to be for an earlier version of OSCommerce.

 

Any help appreciated.
