Guest Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Hi, Can anyone supply details of the best courier company to use in the UK in terms of pricing. Maybe it's best to mix the pricing from different companies in a table rate. Do TNT have good rates from 2-5Kgs and City Link good rates from 5-10Kgs? Or, is it best to just use Royal Mail Standard Parcel service. ?10-ish up to 30Kgs, but no signature, only proof of posting. Where do you stand legally if there is no customer signature, only proof of purchase? I have just looked at Fedex & UPS and their prices are just staggering. 3Kgs from Salisbury to Birmingham, ?16.00 standard delivery, ?24.00 Next Day! Royal Mail is OK up to 2 Kgs, but I will be sending a lot of goods that weigh between 2Kgs and 10Kgs, and any multiple item order will exceed 2Kgs almost every time. Do other shop owners take a hit on shipping or hide some of the cost in their prices (not sure how many will admit to that  )? What are your views on shipping costs? Personally I am put off once I see a shipping cost much above ?5, does anyone else feel there is an 'upper limit' to how much you can reasonable charge. I do have Ship in Cart installed so the customer will at least see the shipping cost before committing. Any help/advice/personal experience much appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Paul.
Guest Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Oops, only proof of purchase? should read only proof of posting?
Quasi Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Yeah, Im having the same thoughts, and am coming round to the idea of putting some prices in the zone rates section and then using whoever is best for that particular weight. I've put the UK special/recorded delivery contribs in my store for now (still testing, almost ready to launch) but they get very expensive for big things. As for personal view on shipping costs, I think of it more in terms of how much the shipping is compared to what Im spending. ie, ?50 shipping and insurance for a ?1000 item might not be so bad (so long as its more than say ?1100 in a local shop). Proof of posting, I think that if you had posted something and the customer disputes it then its something that would end up in the small claims court. Ive only looked at Royal Mail as far as "proof of posting" services are concerned, anyone know if theres any couriors who always ask for a signature? Rob Does this smell like chloroform to you?
Guest Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Thanks for your thoughts Rob. I have zones setup and the UKSD mod included in the shop. I have just setup UKRD prices up to 2Kgs and then added Parcel Post for weights up to 30Kg. I think TNT, UPS & Fedex all ask for signatures, but I'm coming to the conclusion that if it's insured then I'm OK. Good luck with the launch. Cheers Paul.
