Wondering what the maximum number of products / categories is? Where is the threshold where performance decreases due to the size of the database? If this was asked before I couldn't find it. Comments appreciated, especially from those who run large stores...

I have over 2100, how much do you want, it will just take more space, mine is on a 350 , I had 1500 products on 200

ok then, I have a major concern.

I have been looking into redoing a friend's comic book store to a real ecommerce site (they're updating data manually w/ frontpage). My concern is that they have upwards of a coupld hundered thousand (300k+) unique items.

Will OSC die on me at this point? should I consider other software or should I develop a "custom" solution that skimps on the pretty details. Should they really purcahse a full rack unit; will virtual hosting cover this kind of processing?

I think OSC will be fine. Its your mysql database size. Max size of mysql maxdb is 32 TB, so I think you should be good.... I'd take a look at their site and see what is recommended for a database your size.

9 times out of 10 its a PEBCAK Error (Problem exists between chair and keyboard)

Replace that and you're fine...

I feel sorry for the person who has to add all those products I get tired after a few hundred

nah - inventory is already in a CSV file.

and thanks for the other input; I think I'll stick with OsCommerce!

hmm... anyone care to tell me how to add listings via csv files?

I am not sure on other servers, but most have a MySQL administration on the control panel. From there you should be able to import CVS (TXT files) into the tables you want. In my case I created an excell file from cutomers access database, with sheets for the tables, laid out in columns the same as each table in MySQL. Then created CSV files from each sheet. Opened MySQL from control panel, choose the table I wanted, then imported 2,000+ items.

3.2 million products and counting. This is on a dedicated (and very high powered) server.

3.2 Million Products?

Come on,... Really?

Whats the address? I'd like to see the products being sold. This would be very interesting to check out.

I don't even think Super Wal-Mart has even 1/100th of that amount.
