SSL path to use? Step by step?

Hi,

 

I've read the threads here and have spoken to my hosting service. I know what I need to edit in the includes and admin/includes configure.php files (3 lines each I believe). My question:

 

Background:

 

- All the examples show https://www.mydomain.com as the HTTPS server. I have an index.php file in my root that's basically a big graphic with 'click to enter catalog' in the middle. Click that link and you go to my <public_html>/catalog/default.php page.

 

- As soon as my question below is answered, I'll get a CSR done and will go buy an SSL cert...probably from InstantSSL (no single sale will be more than around $2k)

 

- ALL I WANT is that the login and checkout pages are secure, otherwise...who cares?

 

Question:

 

- Should I use https://www.mydomain.com or https://www.mydomain.com/catalog as the secure host URL (to be edited later into the configure.php files)?
