Quickbooks Contribution for MS2

Recommended Posts

Would anyone else make use of a Quickbooks contribution for MS2?

There are two contributions that currently exist for MS1 but as I understand they have some gliches that need to be worked out.

Unfortunately I am not a programmer so I can't handle the technical side of things but I would be willing to contribute some money to get this done.

Anyone else interested in using a Quickbooks contribution and maybe pitching in $50 to get this contribution done?

Does anyone know write the code for a contribution like this?

Any help or comments would be so very helpful.

Not sure if I would have time to do any of this soon. I looked at the descriptions of the previous QB contribs the other day. I suppose if they work well they would not be hard to rework for MS2. I just don't know if I want to go the IIF import route.

I've thought about something more along the lines of an OSC export engine that receives and sends XML over HTTP (similar to the UPS APIs). Then I would write either a Windows or Java Swing client that would bridge between the OSC export engine and QB APIs. It's been a while since I peeked at the QB APIs. I know this is much bigger than a IIF generator and I'm not sure if I will have the time or motivation to do this.

Truth be told, although we are pretty well invested in QB, I am not a big fan of Intuit and would consider switching to an open source accounting package if I felt there was a robust, stable one available. Or maybe even some other proprietary non-Intuit solution. I'm just tired of the many lame and restrictive implementations that tyr to bring you down the Intuit revenue generation trail...

Oh well, I guess you weren't asking for an Intuit rant.

Yes, If you build it they will come.

Actually, Quickbooks is one of the "standards" in accounting packages. If you can do it many people will be able to use it. Or maybe convert it to there software through a "quickbooks filter" Who knows! I you need it, then it is possible that others do to.

YES! We are definitely interested in seeing a Quickbooks contribution, especially one that will work with their Merchant Account Services feature.

Unfortunately I am not well versed in programming, IIF or their new qbXML format to help much in getting it done but would consider donating to the effort.

What does everyone think, should we just try to improve the existing contribution and make it compatible with MS2 or should we simply try to start from scratch?

I am very anxious for a contribution like this but I have very little programming knowledge.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Another shopping cart called SunShop (by Turnkeywebtools) offers a quickbooks export feature. You can check it out below. I believe this is very similar to this previous Quickbooks contribution http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,291

Anyone know what we would need to do to the contribution above to improve it and make it compatible with MS2?

I too am very interested in a quickbooks module. I'm really not a fan of the existing module, but im no QB expert either.

If there was some solid documentation on the existing mod i'd be willing to give it a shot (developing it)

Yes. I too am very interested in seeing a contribution that would interface with QB's API. Like pvallen said, this would take a lot of work. I've done some peeking at the QB SDK documentation, and this would take some time and effort. Unfortunately, i lack the programming expertise to get this going. But, just wanted to say i'd be more than happy to see this contribution come into existense.

What concerns me about the existing module is that it doesn't transfer the credit card payment information for those who use Quickbooks' Merchant Account Service to process credit card transactions. I think that since Intuit is no longer supporting the IIF file format, a new module should be developed to use qbXML.

I noticed that someone posted a fairly simple XML export module already. I imagine that could be modified to interface with Quickbooks using their qbXML markup. It is my understanding that qbXML is not like the IIF where you can import the file from the file menu. It needs some process running that looks for it and imports it to Quickbooks.

Not sure about 2003 but i do now that in the image in the new package it shows what QB options must be set in order to allow an import of an iff file to happen. So make sure you set QB options like the options in the image file included in the release.

If this module was tested to work on QuickBooks Pro 2003 (Canadian) to import the sales and customer info, in a tested way (wasn't a beta version) and was fairly easy to install, it would be worth $50 USD. I've taken PHP classes and such, and would be of little assistance in the creation, but would be willing to help in what ever method I could.

Personally, I would base my work off: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,957

But I dont have time for that right now.
