Designing the web site once setup is complete???

I have set-up osCommerce and it seems to be working perfectly, I only concern I now have is editing the PHP files such as:

 

http://www.yourdomain.com/store/default.php

 

So that I get the look that I am after and remove some of the options down the left and right sides of the page.

 

What have people been using to do this? I don't have any experience with PHP and am having to do it the hard way, by deleting strips of html code to the design I want.

 

In other shopping carts I have used, they usually have html (which I know) and link to PHP via links in the html.

 

Any ideas??
