Also if you have a DHCP setup on your DSL line then your IP address could change, so how will your customers find you? OK, you could setup a dynamic DNS service. And is your DSL line ADSL? Cos in that case youre really missing the high upstream bandwidth that a web server needs. So its technically possible, but a home broadband line really isnt designed for that sort of thing. I would recommend a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) solution, but it is possible to use MS Windows and IIS (with MySQL and PHP). This can be econmical if you already own a web server. Most rent server space/bandwidth because that is cheaper than buying one's own. That is not a requirement by any means though. Guest Posted July 15, 2003 Share Posted July 15, 2003 The very reason I looked at osCommerce was that I wanted to host my own site on own server equipment etc. Site will go live tommorrow, acceptance testing allowing. Aside from the server hardware build, software install, configuration etc etc The most important items are: backup software backup software backup software a firewall and an industrial strength anti - virus solution come a very close second. Unless you keep a mirrored server cluster n your front room all your efforts will be wiped from time to time without backup software.
