How do you rate OSCommerce?

Very simply I was just about to pay for an ecommerce solution and then found this site. On the face of it looks great, but before I download and start using it, I'd be grateful if you would give me your opinion of how this software rates in marks out of 10.

I'm pretty new to this, I've only been doing this for about 6 months. I like oscommerce because it is infinitely customizable and relatively easy to use. I think what puts it over the top, is this support forum. I have tried some of the other free carts and pay carts, but found them either having limited or difficult customizing ability and/or limited support.

I would have to rate it a 9

Well, compared to other free software, I'd give it a 9 as well.

But compared to software that you pay for that they give you the source for, I'd give it a 7.

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.

It totally depends on what features you need and how much customization you want to do and how much work YOU want to put into it.

osCommerce is great for many stores and others need different solutions.

Define what you want your store to do, look at the osc features and if they mostly match, then use osc.

had to put my 2 cents worth in.....

I previously tried 4/5 carts, all in the middling range (actinic, PHPShop, etc) and OSc is the only truly customisable shop, and quite quick at it too.

I will say however, in the words of someones sig I've seen on the forum: "I've heard of leanring curves, but this is almost a vertical clime!". If you want the best from it, you need to customise it, if you want to customise it, you need to understand some of the basic concepts of the programming structure used in OSc.

Over all the others I'd say 9 as the support community is very strong

Thanks,

L.

osCommerce is by far the worst software I have ever used, stay away from it, it will take away your life! I advise you to spend all your money on lesser quality e-commerce package that will not turn you into a raving osC addict.

If you get osCommerce for free you will lose your life through being addicted to this damn package, spending countless hours in the contribs section trying to improve your site and roaming the forums trying to find like minded people willing to help out.

What other software really offers the flexibility of osCommerce? I think for me that answers the question right there.

Keep going strong osC!!

OS Commerce is a time saver. A project like that from scratch would take almost 1 year for a computer programmer maybe 6-8 months if they are good. I have no complaints with them so far since they are free :D so I have to go all out and give it a 10!
