Just another poll to find out what size resolutions people have.

I've found that it works better for me if a site is set to 800x600, even though I run at 1024x768. This is because I move the taskbar to the side of the screen, rather than the bottom. This gives me more vertical viewing area, which I find more valuable than horizontal area (one can only view so much horizontally at one time).

 

I voted 1024x768, but I would really prefer sites for 800x600 or even 800x800.

I have 1280 x 1024 - cirlces are round, squares are square - and the screen viewable area is deeper...

I have 1152 x 864 (4:3 ratio) AND 800 x 600.

 

If you ever need to buy a new video card, I'd recommend a multi-monitor card! Especially if web developing...

 

My productivity has increased 10 fold with two monitors.

To get the screen aspect ratio divide the height by the width

 

Screen res - Ratio

 

640x480 = 0.75

800x600 = 0.75

1024x768 = 0.75

1152x864 = 0.75

1280x960 = 0.75

1280x1024 = 0.80

1600x1200 = 0.75

 

Hmmm, something looks wrong for 1280x 1024!

 

0.75 is a 4:3 ratio (normal tv), 0.80 is a 5:4 ratio (I have no idea what that corresponds to). Now measure the size of the viewable area of your monitor. Mine is 40cm wide, 30cm high, conveniently showing it has a 4:3 aspect ratio.

 

So for a 1280x1024 screen to still have proper round circles displaying one of 2 things must be happening:

 

1) Each pixel is no longer "square" but an oblong, wider than it is high.

2) Your monitors screen physicaly changes size when you swap between 1280x1024 and any other resolution.

 

Obviously 2 is impossible, and 1 isnt good. However, in my case 3 happens:

 

3) Circles are no longer round.

 

OK, being a complete geek I drew a circle in a graphics package in 1280x960 res, and measured it - 68mm wide, 68 mm high. I then swapped to 1280x1024 res and measured it again - 68mm wide, 64mm high.

 

And yes TB, couldnt agree with you more, having 2 monitors is sooo useful, though in my case I prefer having them on 2 seperate computers next to each other.
