henri
Never Change a running System ;) There were changes in the languagefiles, so it won't work out of the box.
loxly
Apparently the team decided we need to all rebuild our stores from scratch if we want to upgrade and that it has decided to outdate 90% of the user contributions. To me this is not an upgrade or a Milestone, this is a creation of a new program and I hope the new forum gets launched at the same time AND the contributions section gets an IMMEDIATE overhaul so that ALL current contributions get marked automatically that they WILL NOT work with the new MS2. New people finding this site will think that this stuff is all available for the latest version and they will be VERY confused. Oscommerce is wonderful software, but other wonderful software has lost major community support by pulling stuff like the team just pulled and has basically created it's own worst nightmare. It has "forked" itself. There are THOUSANDS of stores used pre-MS2 versions, that CANNOT upgrade if they have any contributions installed. And lets face it, without the contributions many of us would have gone with other software, free or paid. I came to oscommerce because of the affiliate program. I stayed because of community support and other features that have been user contributed and built by community members. Those members have been slapped in the face by MS2. People with heavily modded stores have been slapped in the face. And the VOLUNTEERS that provide help and support in the forums will be clueless as to how to make things work now. So, to the team, prepare to stop codeing and prepare to be en masse in the forums to answer the questions for all the problems you have created. I hope MS2 is worth it to the new people coming. I have a feeling many of us here now, will be using our MS1 stores and mods for a long time to come...... I waited with anticipation for MS1, I kept up until 5/18 and things started to break. That is the stopping point for me. [no external urls in signatures please, kthanks]
Guest
Is MS2 that different? I haven't looked at the CVS lately, but I thougth this was mainly just a big bugfix release for MS1? I took my copy of MS1, and I made many of the changes listed in the tep-commits news letter, although not all of them, especially recently. Some of the fixes made were really pretty necessary. I have no ideas what features were added, but I hope the team did add some of the common modifications osC needs. Theming would be nice, but I think thats slated for a later release, in the mean time I have my own theming engine finished now. Other things like header tags or category descriptions, or fixing the postal code position...fairly common things that were fixed in contributions and should be added to osC at some point. Id have to see MS2 to really comment on this though, but some of the contributions should still work as long as there arent any major changes. That really is the nature of contributions. Some get outdated, some stop working and need tweaking, others are really purposeful and get added in to the actual build. Many contributions simply need a global find/replace to be reimplimented. Some of my own modifications were done on the module level, I created new modules for item display and themes and stuff, and they should be easy to add back in. MultiVendorShipping and all the multi-image things I did will have to be redone of course, and that will be a pain, but I planned for it. I guess I just got used to the nature of this OS beast. Its always a pain when revisions occur that force all sorts of things to go obsolete, just look at vBulletin, but I guess theres good things that come out of it as well. Most contributions dont affect the raw store functionality of osC, and I beleive that is where most of the fixes in MS2 really occur.
