Today is going to be a shorter post about why online businesses should consider using osCommerce to power their online store.

It's shorter in the name too - and it's SEO. osCommerce has probably the best on-site SEO that comes straight out of the box with it. And yes, it is free too.

So, what makes a good SEO?

First of all, it is the page load speed and the way the pages load for the user. Here, during Google page speed tests, osCommerce comes "green". Not only the pages that are optimised, but also images and scripts.

Then it is the way pages are described. Talking titles, meta tags, headers, URLs. Here osCommerce automates as much as it can. Allowing you to override any of those properties for any product, category, brand, content page. And of course the main page and other system pages. Even image file names can be changed to make them look more descriptive for search engines.

Finally, it is the URLs again. So, yes, the Ecommerce platform will suggest the most SEO-friendly name for the URL for each content element of the site. Which can be manually changed if needs be. But it is also possible to add URL aliases (or how we call them - old URLs) to any content element. So if you had an old site, and have now switched to osCommerce, you can keep the old URL as an alias for any product etc and search engines and your users will be redirected to the new, SEO-friendly ones.

More than that, if you change product name for example, it may be reflected in the URL. But now, with osCommerce, you can change product names (and such of categories, brands, etc) knowing that old URLs will be safely kept as aliases and redirects.

What's more, you can set global (site-level) SEO redirects if you like.

Naturally osCommerce generates Google XML site map automatically.

Last but not least, it has built in support for Google analytics, Google tag manager, and many other trackers. You just need to enter your account ID.
