hi, am fairly new to ecommerce but in the distant past I have used cubecart, I am not a web developer, but I have some basics that has got me through things int he past.

am just trying to get oscommerce set up, I have changed the directory "catalog" to "store" will that matter? and then followed install process.

I am now at the Post Installation Notes

Post-Installation Notes

It is recommended to follow the following post-installation steps to secure your osCommerce Online Merchant online store:

  1. Delete the /home/buxtonr1/public_html/store/install directory. DONE THIS
  2. Rename the Administration Tool directory located at /home/buxtonr1/public_html/store/admin. if I do this I get a Page Not Found when trying to log in at Administration Tool
  3. Set the permissions on /home/buxtonr1/public_html/store/includes/configure.php to 644 (or 444 if this file is still writable). DONE THIS
  4. Set the permissions on /home/buxtonr1/public_html/store/admin/includes/configure.php to 644 (or 444 if this file is still writable). DONE THIS
  5. Review the directory permissions on the Administration Tool -> Tools -> Security Directory Permissions page. CANT LOG IN
  6. The Administration Tool should be further protected using htaccess/htpasswd and can be set-up within the Configuration -> Administrators page. CANT LOG IN

I get a log in screen, but only if I keep my admin folder as named admin

when trying to log in with my user and pass, the page does nothing and I cant get into the Admin Tool

Can anyone just point me in the right direction just so I can get to the Admin Tool?

many thanks

No. it doesn't matter.

Rename the Administration Tool directory

Since this Post installation, you have to edit the admin/includes/confiugre.php file and change the name of the admin there also

This is optional. It does provide more protection by adding a popup dialog. Some shop owners don't like the bother - some deem it worth it. If you want both logins, the better way to do it is to set a popup login through your control panel, if it is offered, since that will allow you to use a different set of login credentials.
