Error during install (after database already created)

I am getting a 500 Internal server error after the install step of entering company information - database has already been populated with product data etc. however after clicking next on step 4 I am given a 500 error page: 

 

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@mydomain.com to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Refreshing the 500 internal server erorr page worked (i got the error twice/deleted and recreated the database).
