updating and fixing v2.3.4

Hi I have an e commerce website at present it is the v2.3.4 version which has started to show signs of needing updating. My present developer has said this is not possible as os commerce is outdated. I would like to keep my website on this platform if possible can anyone please advise as i had heard there may be a newer version coming. Thank you
