php version compatibility

Hello.

I'm running OScommerce   2.3.4.1 CE Frozen Bootstrap v3.     My hosting provider is discontinuing support for php 7.1, which it runs perfectly on.

I've searched the forums and can't seem to find a definitive answer as there is a lot of confusion over the difference historic versions.

Will this version (2.3.4.1 CE Frozen Bootstrap v3 - installed in 2018) run on later php versions i.e. 7.4 and up without problems?   I'm guessing php 8 will break it, but is it stable on 7.4?

The site is so heavily modified that I cannot quickly upgrade it, but that would be on the to-do list as a future job.  I just need to keep it working for now.  I am interested to see there is now a OsCommerce version 4 in development.  How stable is that looking?

many thanks

Most likely not. In the least, it will generate a very large number of php warnings so you will need to be sure to disable error reporting. Many hosts are removing versions of php prior to 7.1 but they generally still offer 7.2. Your site might run without too many problems under 7.2 so you may want to check with your host to see if that is an option.

osCommerce Frozen edition will run fine on php 7.4. It has error reporting set to suppress errors anyway so you won't even notice the errors. If you are interested in resolving those errors, you can easily do so, there may be many instances / occurrences, but they are all of a certain type, which are not many.

To answer the 2nd part of your question, nobody yet knows anything about the stability of osC V4.

Thank you both for your answers.  I'll test it thoroughly on 7.4 anyway but it seems it may be ok then on that php version.

Ah yes v4 is still beta isn't it.  So it looks as though we've jumped straight from oscommerce 2.3.4.1 various versions to oscommerce v4.   There wasn't a v3 was there?

2.3.4.1 was the last official release. Then there were the community editions in the form of Frozen, Edge, then Phoenix (no longer osCommerce, but a fork).

I did not know that was the definition of the word fork - so i googled it, and found this:

"Forking is to take the source code from an open source software program and develop an entirely new program."

Anyway i am happy to retract my statement if i am wrong. 😁
