Thank you, Chuntse! We don't have a Chinese language yet but it would be simply amazing to have it! Could you please kindly email us via the Contact page on the website and we will provide all the files in the near future? Thank you!

Thank you @osCommerce-Official. This is very exciting indeed. Will this new iteration of our beloved OSCommerce be similar in features to that of Magento? There has always been some features lacking in past versions of OSC that should be in the initial out of the box download. Can't wait to see what is planned. Also, will apps/Addons need to be added manually or will there be an install process, say like Wordpress?

Ah, the world wide web. What a wonderful place.

Not a problem at all. And indeed we are very excited too - we are looking forward to making osCommerce an Ecommerce platform of choice for many businesses, not just the current users of its old version, but new as well.

We are looking forward to giving it as a powerful Ecommerce tool to various designers, developers, and consultants.

We are looking forward to building it, so that all types of users - shop owners and developers - could see their business growing with osCommerce.

Whether it will be comparable with Magento or other carts - it will be for you, the users, to say. It will have a great deal of new features and we hope to be able to add even more in the future. The main difference between osCommerce v4 and old osCommerce (along with its "forks") is that despite being an open source and free platform, osCommerce v4 will not demand that its users shall be coders if they want to change something simple in the shop - a lot of site management tasks will be possible to perform from the back end using various tools. And we will be trying our very best to keep the platform compatible with the apps and vice versa, so that the upgrade process wont be as "painful" as it was with older osCommerce or its alternative versions.

The Add-on/App store - the exact format is to be confirmed, however it is clear that it will not need to be a manual process to install or upgrade an app.

Hi, tell me, will the system be multistore capable?

Peter,

Yes, there exists a so called "Multiple Sales Channels" functionality already, we wrote about it here:

Basically, your system can have more than 1 sales channel. There are 3 types of sales channels:

1. Web - i.e. yet another web site or front end, with its own URL, design, content, payment and shipping modules. They can run on separate domains or sub-domains

2. Virtual - these are used for affiliate sales or for field agent sales

3. Marketplaces - like Amazon, eBay, and soon to come to osCommerce - CDiscount

We are debating now though if multiple sales channels will be available in the "out of the box" version or if they will be an app, and also, in the latter case - if the app will be a free or paid one. Will keep everyone up to date with our progress!

One of the most important factors we hope the new version has is speed to process an order and stock updating 😁

Sure, it is utterly important for the Ecommerce platform to be up to the task. What sort of load would your online store have? How many orders a day, how many simultaneous users, how many products, and what integrations?

Some clients using the system what is becoming osCommerce v4 have up to 5,000 orders a day at peak times. Some clients have over 1,000,000 products in the catalogue (yes, that impressed us as well), some clients have over 1,000,000 customer accounts. And then again, a lot of clients have their Ecommerce solutions integrated with various 3rd parties, like product feeds (ICECat for example), supplier feeds, warehouse management systems, CRM / ERP, etc. Naturally a lot of data is being exchanged between the Ecommerce website and all those 3rd parties, and yes, the new osCommerce v4 will be very good for it.

One thing that is important is hosting. One can not expect their super-busy and powerful Ecommerce store, processing hundreds or thousands of orders, to use shared hosting - we would recommend at least some Virtual Private Server or a Cloud account for it. More to come on hosting recommendations.

Hello,

First, I would you congrats on your investment and take this new challenge.
Some people were very disappointed by the recent past to go to do something else. I was tired also
I hope this new dynamic will impulse the eldest solution (or the first solution) open-source on the market by a new business model and allow to acquire new developer, consultant, designer and create a new positive dynamic inside the community.

I looked at the new OSC 4 forum and the design and capacities seem very good in my first impression, If I can help in the future, It will be a pleasure. Do not hesitate to contact me
Is it possible to know more about the technology on the framework do you want to use? You said you take a new approach, I am very curious.
About the solution, it will b2b / b2c, marketplace? What is your approach inside the functionalities on the V4?
I suppose also you want to propose a solution closer to Magento than a WordPress? Correct?

We would recommend at least some Virtual Private Server ===> I suppose the solution will be not very lite. Question, some people inside the forum have a little company. Osc was always lite, simple to understand (it was this success), what is the way for the v4 about the customization, adaptation.
I think all the people must develop new skills and need more deep knowledge?

Thank you for your communication and enjoy :)

Last question, the V4.0 takes in consideration the double tax (Canadian, US for example ) and it is it ready for GDPR norms (front and back)?

Thank you.

That is understandable, and we are here to change the trend.

It is PHP and mySQL in its essence.

We put a framework called YII (YII2) into its foundation.

However there will be a special series of posts dedicated to the technology in the future, as we want to make it very clear to future osCommerce developers how to build apps, how to work with the themes, widgets, etc.

There is currently support for B2B inside the system. We are debating on how it will be delivered - either "out of the box" or as an app, and, in the latter case - free or paid.

This forum will be used to publish information about the features of osCommerce 4. For example, yesterday we published a post on its on-site SEO functionality

and also Menu management

It will be a modern, feature-rich, secure, and scalable solution - that's for sure. We are aiming for osCommerce to become a mainstream Ecommerce platform of choice. It will be more agile, and hopefully, more capable platform than some of its competition. Also, the aim is to make it a viable solution for businesses - solution that is easier and cheaper to develop and to run and maintain in the long term.

It will surely be more capable than WordPress (or rather WooCommerce), although it will have much more CMS and Design control in it than ever before.

Indeed it is much more at the moment than osCommerce 2.x was before. We realize that we need to make it as simple and easy as possible - hence we are not releasing it right now but are working on a number of things, including making it a bit simpler too.

VPN is a very sensible option in terms of pricing nowadays, and it can give enough to host a very decent Ecommerce website, with a number of orders per day, integrations with 3rd parties, etc. We will be posting separately on hosting here as well.

Yes, and no :)

osCommerce v4 will be a new system, that is true. However it was influenced a lot by osCommerce as such, and also by "common sense" - it was built for real businesses and developers, based a lot on their requirements and needs.

osCommerce v4 is a system where you do NOT need to code to change relatively simple things, or not so simple things too. It is built to allow pro-users to run their online stores or such of their own clients (talking about design agencies here, or marketing/ecommerce consultants for example). Of course we will releasing coding guidelines for those willing to create new apps (and yes, we WILL be launch an App or Add-on store to allow designers and developers offer their solutions), themes, widgets, etc.

Thank you.

Regarding taxes - there's a more standard "osCommerce"-style solution, however we are looking to team-up with tax specialists to bring tax-calculating solutions to osCommerce v4.

GDPR - sure, it is already there.

Ok, about the tax, it's important to have something flexible and easy to manage. The taxes in US are creasy, more simple in Canada but you must do not forget the shipping approach. For example in Canada you have 2 choices, one to explode the shipping with the taxes one to include all in single tax. But on the last point, the shop owner must be careful on the last option.
Now some years ago, Prestashop has been the same problem when it tries to penetrate Canada and arrive without this functionality. Take carefully this aspect into consideration, do not make the same mistake..

We are debating on how it will be delivered ====>
All the good e-commerce platforms include B2 inside the core. Magento is an example of that. The difficulty is to allow the administrator to have the best flexibilities on that (product, payment, specials, favorites, features, coupons ...).
In my point of view, this feature must be free but if you include capacities to make a  marketplace, it could be paid and give another interesting value.

Yii --> I do not know this framework - Why do you take that bootstrap, Material Design, angular ... Nice to know and understand your approach.
Last question: About composer, it will be easy to integrate library, What is your approach, control, update and security check?

Sorry, I put lot of question :)

However it was influenced a lot by osCommerce as such, and also by "common sense"  ==> Nice to take in consideration the community work.

Also, do you have a date to propose something for the community or tester selected?

Thanks for the heads up!

Tax is set similarly to how it was set in osCommerce before - i.e. tax classes, tax zones, and tax rates.

It is possible to assign (or not assign) tax on products, shipping methods, etc.

However a new approach is that it is possible to control how shipping and other order total elements are displayed or used on different pages and in different documents (like invoices). There will be a post about this later. It would be great to work with you and other Canadian users to ensure we have done this right.

We will confirm once we have made a decision on how it will be done.

One thing that we have to consider is that we shall not make osCommerce v4 over complicated. We want to take a gradual approach and introduce features at certain pace, to not confuse the users.

There will be manuals provided, with examples, for development partners. We will have special posts in regards to building apps, widgets, themes, security, etc.

Mind you, we already have an API that developers can use to work with the system.

Thanks!

About the tax, Osc has a basic calculation. If you have a double taxe, you must include the specific aspect

For canadian taxes, Osc does not calculate correctly.

The  summary dashboard: https://www.commercedetail.org/ressources/faits-en-bref/taux-de-la-taxe-de-vente-par-province/
More explanation: https://www.revenuquebec.ca/en/businesses/consumption-taxes/gsthst-and-qst/collecting-gst-and-qst/calculating-the-taxes/

I suggest you to create a specific menu call Regulation : it will be better to manage the invoice rules (display French TVA or TPS, TVQ number, company number ....) and include all the information needed and other the important specific aspect.

Delighted to see that a new, more modern version of Oscommerce is approaching and that it incorporates the codes that make it successful: simplicity, modularity and free.

Have you thought about incorporating a "typehead" search system (Bootstrap) natively?
Which version of Bootstrap was chosen for the Front End of the site?

Osc v2.3.4 BS "custom"
PHP 7.3 compatible (710 modified files => o_O')

Gwenn, thanks for your quiestions:

Search - it is progressive / auto-complete search by default.

Front end - is not based on a bootstrap as such, but on the built in Template Designer. You can design any page to look anything you like. You can have multiple design templates too. Inside a page, you can work with Widgets. We will be publishing guides on how to create and add new widgets, how to create themes, etc. And of course we will be welcoming osCommerce Design Templates to the App store.

You can read more about the Design system here:

So we need custom templates to provide Bootsrap solution in Front End, isn't it ?

What about the stock management of products attributes?
This feature has always been the weak point of Oscommerce natively.

Do you have upgraded possibilities of this feature ?

Gwenn,

We will demonstrate how to create templates, how to move them across multiple sites in osCommerce. We want for our future marketplace to be full of not just useful apps but great templates too!

Stock management on attributes (or rather one or multiple attribute values) - yes, it is there of course!

We will be posting about it soon on this forum.

Not at all :)

Our goal is to go live as soon as possible. And yes, we want to have as many developers, designers, consultants to learn the new version as soon as possible too.

So the moment we have something to show - it will be available.

We do not object any feedback and are looking forward to making it a VERY, VERY successful Ecommerce solution.
