JoeWoodworker Posted June 30, 2003 Posted June 30, 2003 I am about to start a new project and was wondering if there is any reason to use 2.2CVS versus MS1. It appears that 2.2 CVS has more working contributions and my current shop (snapshot 11/28/02) is running quite nicely. But I dont want to install a version which could become obsolete. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe Evil will always triumph over good... Because good is dumb. - D.H.
mdfst13 Posted June 30, 2003 Posted June 30, 2003 MS1 is closer to obsolete than the CVS. The CVS is the latest version. The only difference between the current CVS and what will be MS2 is potential bug fixes. No new development is being done on MS1. Hth, Matt I love deadlines. halbert Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 Depending on how much of a hurry you're in, you can also wait for MS2. It should be arriving any day now... I think it's in the security audit stage. I'd go and start playing with 2.2 CVS and then use MS2 once it's out. Try to keep track of the files you change and use something like beyond compare to move the mods to MS2 once you copy it over. Good luck! -al
Daemonj Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 I would agree with Halbert. Download 2.2CVS and get used to how osC works but do not spend much time with modifications or settings. Take notes on the items that you would like to change (color wise, etc). Wait about a week after MS2 is available to ensure that you get the updates to any bugs that slipped by and then start on your shop. JoeWoodworker Posted July 2, 2003 Author Posted July 2, 2003 I am very familiar with Osc. I 've had a well modified shop now for several months and have completed about 400 orders to date. When will MS 2 be coming out? Do you think many of the pre-MS1 contributions will work with MS2? Should use MS2 or should I use the daily snapshot on the day MS2 comes out? Thanks Joe Evil will always triumph over good... Because good is dumb. - D.H.
Daemonj Posted July 2, 2003 Posted July 2, 2003 No offense was intended - your experience with osC was not known. I would wait a few days after MS2 is released and then grab the CVS version. This will basically be MS2 with any immediate updates. I do not think that a lot of contributions that are pre-MS1 or for that fact after-MS1 will be very compatible with MS2 without a bit of modification. JoeWoodworker Posted July 2, 2003 Author Posted July 2, 2003 No offense taken :) Looks like I'll have to go with an install of my current 11/28/02 snapshot because I'll need several contributions to get it to do what I really need. I havent had any problems with my current shop. In light of this, should I really concern myself with using the latest version? Evil will always triumph over good... Because good is dumb. - D.H.
Daemonj Posted July 2, 2003 Posted July 2, 2003 Only if you are interested with the new features that are built-in. I believe that a lot of changes to enhance the security are also contained in MS2. Such is the reason for the exhaustive security audit the code is currently going through before being released. When you say a lot of contributions, do you have a rough idea of how many? If it is under 7, then you should not run into much trouble adapting them to work with MS2 and then you get all of the benefits. Just a little something to think about. My coding experience is limited to removing lines and experimenting. I definitely could not write any new code. :( Are there major security issues that I should be concerned about with 2.2CVS 11/28/02 Evil will always triumph over good... Because good is dumb. - D.H.
Daemonj Posted July 2, 2003 Posted July 2, 2003 I know that there have been a lot of commits lately as a result of the security audit. The customer account section now cleans the data that is entered to prevent a script from getting passed through. I am not aware of anything else but does not mean that other changes have not been made. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds.
