Is it worth paying for a secure certificate ?

I'm not worried about ssl with credit card payment, because protx use ssl and verisign, but I wanted ssl set for user login (I know how to do this) to help protect users login and account information. This all works fine, but of course the 'security certificate' alert comes up , which doesn't bother me, but might put some customers off.

Do I have to pay someone like verisign ($300 - $400) for this ? or is there a cheaper but effective way to get a certificate or should I just not bother to have ssl except for the credit card transaction ?

any advice welcome.
