Is it possible to have a photo gallery in the product description?

I am not sure whether that can be easily done. However, if you are looking to include static images and even youtube videos, this is possible.

Try install this CKEditor. With this HTML editor, you can edit the product description in HTML format. This means you can incorporate photos, youtube videos in iframes and use CSS classes to decorate the entire product description section.

As @kgtee implied, the product description is stored, and displayed, as HTML. While the add-on he referred to does make it easier to compose HTML markup, it is not necessary. If you know how to code in HTML, you can just enter it in the product description box in Admin. You can include links to pictures, videos, etc.
