hi

what are the diffreneces between osCommerce 2.2CVS and 2.2MS1 ?

Which one does not have bugs? And which one has more contributions?

CVS is the current development snapshot and thus more likely to have bugs. The milestone releases are intended to be more stable. Milestone 2 should be out shortly.

In regards to contributions, it's hard to say. Many of the contributions will actually work with both, although you may need some PHP coding ability to install them (to adjust for things that have changed). Also, remember that there actually many CVS versions (one a day), and older CVS versions will not necessarily work better with the current CVS than with milestone 1.

Something needs to be done to make Contributions less dependent on particular releases.

It seems, right now almost all of the contributions are for the older 2.2 MS1, which has been out for ages.

That being said, the latest CVS contains so many features, most people don't even need contributions.

On another note, is anyone planning on writing a book about customzing osCommerce ? I think that could be a big hit ?

Hi,

I'm sort of new at this. PHP etc...

I'm normally managing not too bad installing contributions etc... but I do have some questions.

Sorry if this sounds like the basics to you but to me...

What are CVS?

Would you have a link on how to install snapshots?

Thanks

For the most part, all that you need to know about CVS is that a snapshot is taken every day which you can obtain from the downloads section (you should have a button for it in the upper left corner of your browser). It installs the same way as a milestone release does.

Just FYI, CVS stands for Concurrent Versions System. Essentially, it allows them to merge (and reverse) separate edits to the same file. In other words, two developers can edit their own local versions of a file and then merge their independent changes together when they upload.

If you really want to get complicated, it is possible to use CVS to keep your modified store current as you go. It's worth noting that Harald recommends making the edits manually over doing this. YMMV. Do not start with a production store if you are going to do this.

Good luck,

Why not? I run several shops that are kept current with the most recent CVS changes without a hitch. What does it being "production" have to do with anything? :?

The critical word was *start*. Accidentally merging changes in such a way that all your pending orders end up getting overwritten is a great way to run a business.

Frankly, I'm not sure that I would recommend that even someone experienced in CVS use it to modify production stores. It can (rarely but potentially devastatingly) make bad decisions about how to integrate different versions of the same file (e.g. if you install contributions and then use CVS to update around them). CVS is really intended for development use, which by its nature means that it expects to produce alpha software.

No hitches *yet*, knock on wood.

Considering I've been doing it this way since the early days of TEP I'd say I don't have anything to worry about.

Harald stated on another post "It is true that Milestone releases are not stable releases, however we try to make them as stable as possible due to the long 2.2 development phase."

I thought that the milestones were the latest stable copies of OSC?!? I want to make sure I'm installing the right thing...

Thanks in advance!

Oh!

Yeah right... sorry, I thought I knew this one.

But one thing I know, they are almost ready with MS2.

So, My hopes are that by Fall, they should have MS3 ready
