Do I *have* to install directly below my server root?

I want to install the admin and catalog directories deeper down than the root of my web server i.e. my server root is /var/www/html/, but I want the admin directory to be /var/www/html/common/osc/admin and catalog one to be /var/www/html/common/osc/catalog.

 

Fiddling with the application_top.php file is giving me a headache. I can get one bit to be how I want it, but then another link fails. Surely, I've overlooked a simple variable in there to tell it to install below /var/www/html/common/osc/. I've tried changing DIR_FS_DOCUMENT_ROOT and that seems to work, but then some images can't be found and links to files such as categories.php seem to duplicate parts of the path.

 

Surely this must be configurable in less than 28 days!

 

Any ideas? Have any of you installed it other than directly below the server root directory?
