Opening php files

How do you open php files with an editor i keep getting an error

I usually type either

 

emacs -nw filename.php

vi filename.php

 

depending on what I want to do. After reading your post, I'm not really sure what you would like to do. Are you trying to open the files locally (i.e. they are installed on the same machine as you are using) or remotely (on a separate server). What OS are you using? What editor are you using? What error are you getting?

Im using dzsoft editor and we are accessing files on a different server
