Breadcrumb trail modification...

I was wondering if it possible to change the breadcrumb trail in two ways:

 

a) when doing a search, to not show the words "Search" and "Search Results"

 

B) when browsing through categories, to show the trail as it is now, except when the current category does not have subcategories itself. If the current category does not have subcategories itself, then to show all higher-level categories (as the trail already does), but not the current category itself.

Example for B):

 

If "Category C" has further subcategories, the trail should stay unchanged:

TOP >> CATALOG >> CATEGORY A >> CATEGORY B >> CATEGORY C

 

If "Category C" does NOT have further subcategories, the trail should now show only:

TOP >> CATALOG >> CATEGORY A >> CATEGORY B

 

Any ideas how I could do this? :D
