How to add Specials/Product Descriptions on to front page?

Hi there,

 

Does anyone know how I would go about adding some specials on to the main default page please? Ideally I'd like to show a few new products, and also some special offers on top in a seperate box. I'd appreciate any assistance with this.

 

Lastly, is there any way of putting a brief description beneath products listed only on the front default page (not in product listing pages). I've seen contributions that'll do the latter, but I don't think they're what I'm looking for.
