raijen Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 I've tried searching, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be looking for. I apologize if this has been addressed before. I'm not thrilled with the tech support for the shopping cart I'm currently using, and my contract expires in November. Hopefully that'll give me plenty of time to learn all I need to about using osCommerce. My question is whether I have to set up osCommerce on a live site to learn it? Or is there a way to "practice" without uploading? I have a domain name I'm not using right now that I could use if I need to. Just realized I had one more quick question. I've gathered from what I've read here that FrontPage can't be used. I do have Dreamweaver 4, although I've never used it before. I downloaded the current Snapshot as well as phpdev423 from Firepages. I also have the Wiki and OSCDoc sites bookmarked. Is this everything I need to get a good start? Thanks so much for all of your help! Rachel
rseigel Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Start by reading the docs at http://wiki.oscommerce.com/
raijen Posted June 9, 2003 Author Posted June 9, 2003 You're exactly right, Ralph. I've been reading here for two days, and even though I don't understand half of what's being said, it's cool when I read something that does "click". I just ordered a couple of books on pHp, so hopefully that'll help me out with the basics so that I don't have to ask so many stupid questions here. Ron, I do have the Wiki site bookmarked to read. I've started with the OSCDocs site first. Rachel
WEBMISSIE Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Just wanted to add some 2cents to the question about whether or not you can use the program locally or do you have to put it online. I had to put it online. I tried for days with many posts to this forum to get the program to work on my local machine running windows 2000 server edition with IIS. I see many people were able to get it to work for them locally but there appeared to be some issue with the paths as they are provided in the program out of the box when using windows 2000 and IIS. I had to put the program online in order to test and play with it. If you are thinking of putting in on your local machine be sure to do a lot of research prior as it needs some type of modification to run locally with windows 2000 server and IIS. Of course if anyone replys to this post and begs to differ, I would love to see how you got it to work as I am paying for hosting space each month just so I can use the program to practice. Even online though it was very easy to setup and get running and the support in the forums is stellar. I had to know a little about php and mysql but not much and I was online in no time. Hope this helps.
Guest Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 I thought you needed AppServ tp run it locally. http://academic.cmri.ac.th/appserv/ I hope it works as I'm going to be away from my sweet 2Mb/sec for 2 months! :o
davidstummer Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 as far as i am concerned, developing your site locally is essential if you only have a 56k connection. what you need to do is download a wampp pack which contains the apache server and so on. then you can run locally
Tecumseh Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Ironically ... I just finished a post in response to another question/discussion. Maybe this may help you ... http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/viewtopic.php...p=179584#179584 You can develop your store locally using a Windows machine (or even a LINUX system) then transfer to a live server when you are ready. You'll still need to make a few adjustments. And for the record, I don't know PHP or HTML coding. I dabbled and learned and made the appropriate adjustments to suit my needs. It takes time and patience. But most of all, I give credit to the people here that like to help. Dave http://www.netfrog.ca Make it your next Internet hop!

davidstummer Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 it is really very easy to install this package and takes a few minutes to set up. and then you can start developing locally.
Tecumseh Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Sorry for the double post ... system was slow and I resubmitted ... my bad .... http://www.netfrog.ca Make it your next Internet hop!
Guest Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Maybe my previous post was a little cryptic... Rather than downloading all the necessary components mentioned in tecumseh's helpful post from different locations, you can just go here, and get a package which includes Apache 1.3.27 Apache Monitor PHP 4.3.1 MySQL 4.0.12 PHP-Nuke 6.5 phpMyAdmin 2.4.0 :)
davidstummer Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 i have tried to download quite a few packages. by FAR the easiest one is wampp http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor...p/wampp-2.2.rar it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy
Guest Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Excellent. I hadn't seen a link to a whole package apart from appserv. Will try out wampp. David, do you ever take your avatar out for a walk? I think it's begging to go outside.
Tecumseh Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 hehe ... nope .. he seems to be a happy little frog ... not sure if thats a good sign or a bad sign ... Dave http://www.netfrog.ca Make it your next Internet hop!
davidstummer Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 no, it just needs the toilet (if you were talking to me) 8) if you go to hotscripts.com, they list a whole selection of packages, although wampp is still the best
Tecumseh Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 lol ... I thought he was talking about my avatar ... hehe .. again, my bad ... http://www.netfrog.ca Make it your next Internet hop!
