Displaying the front page cats like sub cats

Hello,

 

I have nine top level categories and on the front page I would like them to be displayed - exactly the same way the sub cat choices are presented.

 

Is this possible - I thought in the past I saw a mod for this but I have been right through everything and cannott find it - any ideas?
