Rodland Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Does anyone know if this is possible: Some hosting solutions are good, but only offer astronomical prices for SSL. Others offer good prices for SSL, but less tempting hosting prices. Just wanted to know if it would be cheaper and possible to use a hosting company just for the SSL - even if this means using a different (but very similar) domain. i.e. my main site is at http://www.myDomain.com/ I pay this company $150 per year (for instance) the secure server is at httpS://www.myDomain-Secure.com/ I pay $100 a year for this (for instance). See what I mean? Some hosting companies in the UK are only just beginning to offer more reasonable prices for SSL + certificate. Some offer it at prices such as ?150 per quarter which is just ridiculous. In the US the prices are better for this. Shared certificates are not good for business. CMR p.s. I'm not asking for a hosting tip off here - just want to know what to say to my hosting company when/if I suggest this.
Rodland Posted May 28, 2003 Author Posted May 28, 2003 Also, is it normal (and easy) practice to ask a hosting company to provide JUST the secure server (without the certificate) so I can find the cheapest certificate and install it myself?
Aceicol Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 Hi I am not an expert but I have recently found a site that is all about ssl. www.whichssl.org HTH Alex
paulm Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 You shouldn't be bound to any particular supplier of an SSL certificate... as long as your hosting company supports SSL you should be able to get the cerificate from anyone (I think!). InstantSSL are quite a cheap certificate provider I think: http://www.instantssl.com/
