Guest Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Sorry to place to posts so quickly but have a few small questions. I have been looking at sites on the forum (wasted an hour so far) and some of them look very very nice! I was just wondering if most people employ some1 to make their page or if most simply tinker with it themselves. I currently have the grey theme that comes pre built and don't have much coding knowledge and unsure what to do. Is it worth paying someone to design a theme and if so how much should i be paying?
Salvo Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 I started a while back with no knowledge about php and nothing about osc. Now I know a little about php and a little more about osc. (just enough) that is all depends how much you like to get involved with your project... If you start asking someone else to do any small thing for your shop, you will end up having to pay all the times.. I would learn a little bit and ask someone for big projcts..
Guest Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Hmm right. I presume if i didn't actually edit the theme but simply added a logo that it would put customers off? (i quite like the grey theme actually, lol)
Quasi Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Yes, I quite like the standard look too, Ive fiddled with a few bits but I just want to get my site online and working. I can always fiddle once its live, I have a test server to play with. My biggest problem with lots of customisation is: what do you do when a new version of OSC is launched? Do the people with lots of customisations keep a list of changes and just work through them in the new version, or not use new versions or what? Regards, Rob Does this smell like chloroform to you?

Regards, Rob Yep i can't decide if i want to pay for a new theme or what. There is something about the simplicity of the grey one that appeals. and then if the site takes off then i'll invest the profits in getting a new design. Am considering your offer dave. :D
Bricker Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 The great thing about OSC is that the HTML isn't heavily integrated with the PHP like say PHPNuke a content mngnt system. If you know html then you can fiddle with it and make some changes you didn't think possible and some can be done right from the stylesheet too. If you have a way to work on it locally like on a Windoze PC with IIS installed then you can really go crazy and it isn't so much a pain when you mess up. And always make a backup of the file you modify. default.php to default.bak then you always have that working original. My 2 cents :)
Guest Posted May 24, 2003 Posted May 24, 2003 You might want to look at thema contribution. It has 5 themes in it. Take a look at http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,456 This is a look way to see what is being done. Enjoy. Thomas Sorry to place to posts so quickly but have a few small questions. Guest Posted May 24, 2003 Posted May 24, 2003 this site is a demo of thema you can change the theme's on the front page to see what they look like. Some day I may get it finished and go live but not for a while. http://www.pdpatch.com/osc/catalog/default.php theme 6 has not been released not because I don't want to, but more making time to do so.
Daemonj Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Also, look at the catalog/stylesheet.css file. You can change the colors of your site quite easily from just this file. ;) "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. delaen Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 It's strange. I think most of the people that start using OSC and surfing around on people's sites start hating the default layout and colors. But when I came across it the very first time I thought it looked great. It's what made me download and start screwing around with it in the first place. I think everyone here is just really used to it. I think most other people will still think it's nice.
Guest Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 I started using osCommerce for the first time in early April. It was also the first time I had ever seen php and worked with mysql. My html skills are still at a beginner level, but I did find php very easy to pick up and learn. I took the html code from my pre-existing site, and stuck it in /catalog/includes/column_left.php and /catalog/includes/header.php. I then made a few modifications, added some contribs, and VOILA! My site isn't as nice as some of them out there (madmacgames), but for my first osCommerce site and php experience, I don't think I did too bad. Good Luck!
