wvmlt Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Pros: simple & quick to get started Cons: costs, some people don't like using it Keith What the hell was I thinkin'?
wizardsandwars Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Paypal is a nice little way for a start up to get up and running quickly. The cost for merchants in the US is *ver* inexpensive. Lots of people have paypal accounts they like to use. However, once you get up and running, you are going to want to offer an alternative, in addition to paypal. People that do not already have a paypal account are often turned of by having to create a paypal account to pay you. They want to be your customers, not paypal's. Also, there seems to be alot of fraudulent orders going around on paypal right now. I think you'll find that if you start off with paypal, and then add a second option, like 2 checkout, or even your own merchant account/gateway, you maximize your potential customer base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.
orchard Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 I don't think PayPal is an acceptable replacement for taking credit cards. It's not obvious to customers, but they are signing up for a PayPal account, not just paying with a credit card. Also the credit card cannot have been used for another PayPal account, which can be a problem for people that share a credit card with family members or that have forgotten their PayPal password and think they can just start over. I can't imagine anyone that doesn't already have a PayPal account wanting to pay using PayPal. In olden times the men were made of iron and the ships were made of wood; now it's the other way around.
burt Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Agree. It's a viable option for US based stores (or stores selling primarily to the US) where the number of Paypal users is huge compared to elsewhere. But only offer it in conjunction with other method(s), http://www.2checkout.com/cgi-bin/aff.2c?affid=18157 is very cost effective to set up whilst your site is starting out. When it's the right time to upgrade, look at Worldpay or authorize.net etc.
loxly Posted May 16, 2003 Posted May 16, 2003 This is a bad idea to get this started again, there are many threads that hash this out..... over and over and over and over again. There are reasons to use it There are reasons not to use it What do your shoppers want? That is your criteria for using it or not. [no external urls in signatures please, kthanks]
Guest Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 My personal experience with paypal is long and harrowing. I, at one point had $200 in my paypal account, and for some reason their system wouldn't let me withdraw it. I sent an email to their support department about it only to recieve an automated reply directing me to the FAQ (which didn't help either). After searching for ages I found a way to contact their support staff via their site, only to recieve yet another automated response.. this time telling me to see the FAQ and reply to that message if I needed further assistance. I replied to it, explaining my situation for the 3rd time, and (guess what?) I got another automated response telling me the exact same thing as the last one. So I decided to wait a couple of weeks to see if any of these emails were actually being read and someone would get back to me. No one got back to me so after a lot of digging I got their mailing address and sent them an international recorded delivery letter, again explaining my situation. About a month later I got a letter back telling me that i couldn't withdraw my money because there wasn't enough in my account to withdraw (I still had $200 in that account). At this point I went to see my solicitor. He sent them a letter telling them that they were obligated to release my money to me within 28 days of the date on the letter. They sent him a letter back that was *exactly* the same as the one they sent me (like a pre-printed - autoresponse). I had to actually take them to court to get my money (and some interest). All in all this entire process took about a year. So, in conclusion, I will never touch paypal again and advise anyone I meet (who is considering using paypal) against it.
