Rocanion Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 I've searched the entire set of forums with a number of variations on search criteria and have found nothing at all regading osCommerce having an ability to write either activity or error logs. I've been working with eCommerce intensively since 1997 and have found that these types of logs are extremely valuable. They make the work of administering a commerce site much easier since you can refer to the logs in order to nail down a problem very quickly. They can also be valuable in monitoring the activity on the site in real-time in the event that someone is trying to hack your system. The reason I bring this up is that I was playing with the demo of MS2.2 and ran across an error message about the USPS shipping module having a problem. So naturally the first thing I did was to go looking for error log messages. Nothing in /var/log/messages or /var/log/httpd/error.log or /var/log/php4/error.log. So I scanned the code to see what was going on with logging. I found nothing. All I could find related to errors looked like it was building error messages to display to the user. That was very disappointing. My experience tells me that if a user is seeing an error message then the administrator of the site better have a corresponding but much more detailed error message written someplace else, like a secure log file. Otherwise supporting your customers gets very difficult. Any thoughts on this? Am I missing something that goes by another name that my search missed?
