go to admin, and select english as your default language. next, you have to modify the file /catalog/includes/column_right.php

    include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'languages.php');

   include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'currencies.php');

chagne the first bit of code to the secong bit. these // just means that the code following on that li is ignored when the file is read. This mod will get rid of the box with the flags in.
