credit card fraud and Nigeria

Recommended Posts

has anyone or is anyone experiencing rashes of unauthorized purchases from Nigeria? or any place else for that matter. If so, what are some 'best practices' and reccomendations for merchant accounts that help cut down on this sort of thing (if there are any)

Thanks in Advance for Your Time and Opinions.

Pornographic sites face this heavily, and they choose the CC processors that scrub the most. I think CCBill is one of the best scrubers.

are you in Nigeria? do you get orders from Nigeria? do you want to accept orders from Nigeria?

if not, then just remove Nigeria (and any other country you do not want to accept orders from from the countries table)

thats another option....

won't they just select another option? linkpoint does not have Nigeria on their list so US gets substituted on their end--so that might not make a difference--however, i will remove it from the shipping table tonight!

I am in the U.S., we do get orders from Nigeria, at this point I don't think we want to get orders from Nigeria--they are all coming back fraudulent--30 days after the fact!!!

you should check the state department website - they have a list of countries that are known for fraud - we just remove the countries on their list from our country table, and then when people try to order from those countries and can't find their country listed, they usually go away...

fraud is a bitch and there is no sure fire method for protecting against it except to use all the tools you can (like AVS, requiring entry of the card code from the back of the card, etc)

We are currently using linkpoint to process orders and thru osCommerce we don't even have the option of the 3-digit verify card code. As for AVS, i am not even sure i know what that is--i am guessing Automatic Verification Service.

Thanks again for all your help in this matter...

address verification system - only useful for US orders - if they dont give you at least that i would seek another payment system as you have no way of verifying that any of your credit card transactions are real or frauds... AVS is the basic minimum requirement you want - some places offer the use of CVV (card code) and some other tools

i wanted this client to go with nettransact, but he was declined and ended up with the "we'll take anybody" company -- Linkpoint...

come to think about it, i feel like i am caring way to much about this...i just built the site--sometimes i feel like i just care too much...

it happens - its your baby - you created it

as long as they paid you for your work, quietly walk away and let them get themselves in trouble if they don't understand how things work in the real world....

they have paid me, and i would love to walk away quietly, but these guys are middle-man marketers and bring me new sites about two a month and they all want to follow this model and use the same merchant account--i cannot deny the steady work and income (which don't always go hand in hand) So i am trying to get educated so i can make this work for everyone involved.

you have been most helpful (and i already deleted nigeria from the list) :D

then i would try and educate them about the risks and methods to avoid those risks

they must have a certain level of protection in the payment gateway or they are just leaving themselves wide open for trouble

again, they should check the state dept site for a list of countries that are known for high levels of cc fraud, as well as a list of countries that the US cannot do business with

also check out http://www.merchantfraudsquad.com/

lots of useful info there
