Snarg Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Hello, I am using OSCommerce version v2.3.3.1. My hosts PHP version is 5.4. My host recently sent me a message saying they will soon cut off support for PHP version 5.4 and that I need to upgrade to 5.6. Should I expect any major difficulties when I upgrade? Thank you for your time.
MrPhil Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Yes, your store will break when your host upgrades to PHP 5.6. It's possible to go through the code (comparing it to osC 2.3.4) and manually fix the PHP incompatibilities, but since you're so far behind in your osC, you should consider upgrading to osC 2.3.4 (or even better, 2.3.4BS). There is an official upgrade path to 2.3.3.2, then to 2.3.3.3, to 2.3.3.4, and on to 2.3.4. Some have told me that 2.3.4 is not PHP 5.6-compatible, while others have told me it is. 2.3.4BS is definitely PHP 5.6-compatible. However, 2.3.4BS requires a fresh install of that version, and a manual migration of the database (work on a copy of the database, and on a test install directory, so you don't accidentally kill your production store). In any case, use the time before PHP 5.4 disappears from your system to get upgraded!
Snarg Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Well, I guess I may be pretty much $cr3w3d :( No clue how I will be able to update not only my shop software, but get all of my add ons to work as well.
♥14steve14 Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Have a look through the addons area. Most popular addons have already been updated. If you use something that has not been upgraded you can always ask here for help or in the paid for help section. Most addons wont take someone that knows what they are doing that long to convert. By upgrading, your site will also be responsive and not be penalised by many of the search engines now. REMEMBER BACKUP, BACKUP AND BACKUP
TITO4 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Quite obvious, you could also change your hosting and take your shop to another webhosting that supports older versions of php...But by far, the better solution is to upgrade your store. My recomendation 2.3.4 BS. I was in a similar situation a year ago, and now I'm the happiest man in the world. Well, perhaps not so, but the second one, or the third... :D Shopowner, not coder, experienced copypaster :D
♥kymation Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 @@TITO4 It's not a good idea to stay with old versions of PHP. Hosts are updating because version 5.4 is no longer supported, and that means no more security fixes. It may not actually be all that insecure, but do you really want to stay with a host that cares so little about your store's security? TITO4 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Of course not, @@kymation. Absolutely agree with you. I mentioned it just as a possibility, in the case that @@Snarg wanted to stay in that old version. Not only security (being a so important reason), but there are so many reasons for changing to 2.3.4 BS that I only can say do it now!! as soon as possible!!! Snarg Posted April 5, 2016 Author Posted April 5, 2016 Ok, dumb question: Where do I find version 2.3.4BS? I see 2.3.4 for download, but nothing that says 2.3.4BS.
♥kymation Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Not a dumb question; it's not that easy to find. Read this. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support.
Snarg Posted April 5, 2016 Author Posted April 5, 2016 @@kymation Thanks for the reply. I have decided to completly scrap my entire, old, shop and make everything new and shiney. The version you provided, is it ready for the world, or is it a work in progress? Sorry for discussing it in this thread, I'm not sure where else to ask questions.
♥kymation Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 The Gold version is solid and ready to use. The Edge version has more features, but it is actively being developed so some of those features are incomplete. If you are not afraid of patching your code, I would go with the Edge and subscribe to the Github repository to get notified of the latest patches. If you don't want to bother with updating, go with the Gold release. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support.
Snarg Posted April 6, 2016 Author Posted April 6, 2016 @@kymation Once again, thank you for the reply. I appologize for all the questions. I'll try to make this one the last one (for now :): Othere than the list in your sig, where can modules for this version be found?
