qtrmooncommerce Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Greetings . . . I’m trying to find out if updating the OS Commerce version that we are currently running, will alter any of the existing appearance or functionality of our site? Any help would be much appreciated . . .
Jack_mcs Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 If you upgrade to the Bootstrap version, which is what you should do, then yes, it will change. Any appearance changes you have made in your current shop will need to be redone and any code changes, like with addons, will have to be made again. You won't lose anything in the database, like customers and products, if it is converted correctly. This thread provides more details. qtrmooncommerce Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Hi Jack, and thank you for your response . . . is it possible for you to elaborate somewhat on why upgrading to the Bootstrap version is what should be done, so that I can have someone other than myself recommending this to my client. I am trying to help them improve the look and functionality of their site, and it would help to strengthen my efforts if I can paint as clear a picture as possible for them. Once again, your help is much appreciated!
Jack_mcs Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 A few of the top reasons are: - The bootstrap version is mobile-ready. None of the other versions are. Google ranks sites for mobile devices based on if they are mobile-ready or not, besides the normal ranking things. And since more people are searching with mobile devices than desktops, it is very important for the shop to be mobile-ready. - The only updates being done on the core code of oscommerce is on the Bootstrap version. - Most new addons are made to work with the Bootstrap version. Some can be made to work with other versions but some would require a lot of rewritiing to do that. - The Bootstrap version is more secure and efficient than previous versions. MrPhil Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 What is the current version of osC your client is on, and what templates, add-ons, or custom code are involved? Large jumps in versions can introduce substantial changes in look and behavior (not to mention the internals). Obviously, any changes made to add or change functionality in your current store will probably have to be reinstalled or otherwise replicated in the new store (unless they're built in to a newer version). You may be able to get most of your appearance-related items done with CSS file adjustments. Don't get too hung up on keeping the look and feel of an old store -- it can be good to refresh the store anyway! It sounds like you know very little about osC at this time. If your client is paying you for your services, I trust they understand that you are in learning mode WRT osC, and they are OK with that. Many clients are quite unhappy to learn that they've been paying for their expert to learn a new system, if they're not told in advance. If you are reasonably proficient with website work and PHP-based applications, you can probably get a basic store running on the latest osC. However, if you need to figure out what add-ons are needed or how to make custom changes, you've got a fair amount of learning ahead of you.
