praywithdrums Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Yes! I did it again and I don't know how. Can someone copy ALL of the original script in the English.php file so that I can paste it into my file? Or, since my store is not running yet, is it easier for me to delete v2.3.1 and start over? Dan, I was just about to backup when it disappeared. Thanks for your help.
multimixer Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 You can download it from here There is no reason to start a new store using an old version My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
MrPhil Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Yes, you can get that file from one of the archived previous releases. However, the big question is, why in the world are you starting a store with such an ancient release of osC? You should be starting out with osC 2.3.4, or even better, 2.3.4BS (on Github). Just because you have a template for 2.3.1 is no reason to use something so old -- it's penny wise and pound foolish.
praywithdrums Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Thank you so much Multimixer and MrPhil. To answer the question "why?" My web host company is VodaHost and 2.3.1 is the version that they offer. My computer skills, as I'm sure you can tell, are not that great. I've tried in frustration to download 2.3.4 and I'll try the link that you provided, MM. I hope you guys will be able to assist me if I have any issues? Thanks again!!!!
praywithdrums Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Gentlemen, I just uploaded the 2.3.4 into my cpanel and extracted the files. I logged into my stores admin and it still says I'm running the old version 2.3.1. What did I do wrong?
multimixer Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Did you install the new store or did you just upload it? Is it at the same location (folder) as the old one or did you place it into an other folder? Are you sure you login to the new store and not the old? MrPhil Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 My web host company is VodaHost and 2.3.1 is the version that they offer. Yikes! If your host is that many years behind the times, I don't want to think about how out of date they are on performance and security issues. A very good reason to find a new host as soon as possible. If you're having trouble installing 2.3.4, manual installation is much more than just unpacking files into the right place. You have to follow the instructions provided and create your database, and also run the installation script to initialize everything properly. One other thing... if you install the new osC version over the old one (same URL), your browser may be giving you a cached copy of the [old] page. Press Ctrl+F5 to force a page refresh (or clear your browser cache). Finally, please consider getting osC 2.3.4BS (Bootstrap responsive edition). Being on Github, it's a bit more work to install than the official 2.3.4 version available from this site, but could be worth your while. Maybe once you've got the 2.3.4 successfully working, you could then try the 2.3.4BS (install in a different place). Small steps, not giant leaps.
praywithdrums Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 MM & Phil, you guys are great!!!!! I will take and try your suggestions and let you know how it turns out. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!
praywithdrums Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Gents, Before I was about to get in touch with my web host customer service, I read through there support forum and found this question and comment below. Sorry to trouble you again but I'd love to get your thoughts, please. Oscommerce Upgrade Can you upgrade osc from 2.3.1 to 2.3.3 threw fantastico? If so how do you go about it? Re: Oscommerce Upgrade No, you cannot upgrade any script through Fantastico -- it must be performed manually according to the precise instructions provided on the osCommerce official website in DOCUMENTATION.If I were you, I would wait until a stable version is released, which is indicated by the second number in the version. The third number indicates simple "undocumented" releases, usually only with very minor patches applied, and are not considered "stable" enough to warrant the effort to manually upgrade - especially for working carts. The version you are currently using is completely secure and stable for a long time to come ...Your best move would be to not make a move at all, and simply wait until version 2.4.1 is released to the general public.
multimixer Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 @@praywithdrums Please forget about what your host is saying or suggesting - they have simply no idea All upgrades are very well documented ( https://library.oscommerce.com ) and every release is stable to use for an online store However, you are not going to upgrade anything, you are doing a new installation Best is you go on as follows 1) Create a new folder on your server and name it "new_store" 2) Create a new empty database - write down username and password 3) Upload the osCommerce files to folder /new_store/ 4) Point your browser to domain.com/new_store/install and do the online installation You'll have a new store at location domain.com/new_store/ Once you are there, post here again, so we can see what else you need/want to achieve My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
MrPhil Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 That is correct that Fantastico will not handle an upgrade. AFAIK it only does complete installs. Upgrades have to be done manually, using update kits from this site. I consider the text you're quoting to be rather misleading as to what is "stable". 2.3.1 is quite a few years old now and does not support current PHP levels. Maybe in other software, a third-digit increment is only a very minor change, but that's certainly not the case with osC (2.3.4 was a major upgrade). There is no consistency, rhyme, or reason in osC numbering. We've been promised 2.4 for so long now that who knows -- by the time it gets here it may be ready for retirement! Don't wait for it -- it could be years before it gets here, or it could be tomorrow -- those who know aren't telling. There are some big debates going on about this on this site, but the usual advice in the end is to go to the latest release (2.3.4, or better, 2.3.4BS) and forget about waiting for "the latest and greatest". Then make an effort to stay caught up and not fall too far behind.
praywithdrums Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 MM, thanks for indulging me and I really appreciate you and Phil for taking the time. I'm definitely what you would consider to be "IT 101" and I'm still trying to find out which class room it's in, so I might have to read this over 400 times to figure it out. But hey, I've gotten this far and I ain't given up so please bear with me. Thanks again guys. The saga continues.....
praywithdrums Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Very sage advice Mr.Phil. I'll work on it and let you guys know if I blew up my laptop or not.
praywithdrums Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 THE v2.3.4 EAGLE HAS LANDED!!!! While the process was beyond my expertise, knowledge and patience, I asked my web hoster for there assistance. After all, it's on there cpanel. I was hoping the new version would have changed those powder blue boxes but....of well. As I move forward, I'm sure I'll be needing some more help. Of course, I'll check previous posts to see they've covered whatever I need help with first. Thanks again gents for the helping hands. :D
burt Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 @@praywithdrums if you have not already done so, download and install the Responsive Version of osCommerce - into a /testing/ folder. Have a play with it ... for one thing it removes the powder blue boxes, and there are more benefits as well. At least have a play with it to see if floats your boat.
praywithdrums Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Burt, Thanks for the tip but it's the actual "downloading" of stuff where my eyes start to glaze over. I've actually been working with and inputting info into v2.3.1 for about 2 months now and just have to re-do all of that. Thanks again.
multimixer Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 If you already did a good amount of work, like adding products etc, you could keep using your old database and connect it to the new fileset There are just a couple of queries to run for upgrading, that isn't so scary as it sound :) Would this make a sense/ My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
praywithdrums Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 Humm, ok MM but you'll have to explain it to me step by step like I'm in IT Class 101. you remember that the script in my old English.php file is missing? Will that matter using the old database? Thanks.
praywithdrums Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Forgive please me. I've searched the forum and did not find or understood any post on my question below. And, since I can't remember how to establish a new post string, I'm tagging in on here: SUBJECT: How to link the Information Box info (privacy policy, warranty...etc.)? Can I link those items in the Info Box to another page/location, outside of osC? Please keep in mind, I ain't got a clue what I'm doing. Thanks. :)
