latin1_swidish_ci or utf8_unicode_ci

Hi all,

Just a quick one.

I've found that some of my Database Tables are in latin1_swidish_ci.

I'm using English and will be using English. Here's the question. Do I have to change all table that are in Latin1 to utf8_unicode_ci UTF-8? Is it important or not?

I bought the site a week ago and found a few things that don't look right. This is one of them.

If everything is in English, it probably won't have any effect on your site, as English uses only the ASCII common subset of Latin-1 and UTF-8. However, at some point you might get a MySQL error message about incompatible collations, so it would be good to clean it up and make character encoding and collations consistent throughout your database. As you are running a UTF-8 version of osC (2.3.4), it would be best to be UTF-8 throughout.

latin1_swedish_ci is Latin-1 encoding (a common, single-byte character encoding), with Swedish language collation rules for sorting purposes (MySQL was originally developed in Sweden), and letter case is ignored (A=a) in sorting.

utf8_unicode_ci is UTF-8 encoding (multibyte sequences for any non-ASCII character), with generic "Unicode" collation rules for sorting purposes (language independent), and letter case is ignored (A=a) in sorting.

You can't get hold of the previous owner, because they're hiding from you because they know they screwed up the site badly. Do you know if the site has a lot of customizations or add-ons installed? If it doesn't, it might be easier to install a fresh osC 2.3.4, copy over the database and images, and clean up the database manually to match the fresh 2.3.4's DB schema, rather than trying to fix all the problems your site has. You might do that anyway, just to see how customized your site is, and at least you'll know the state of your site.

The previous owner told me he invested $10K customizing it but Ive never had a chance to find out what exactly he's done.

I'm not good in all this technical stuff. I'm a marketer, not an IT guy so I will need some help from someone.

Do you know where is the best place to find someone who can look at it properly (osCommerce geek or something) and tell me if I need to reinstall updates or just fix the codes?

You see, I've never dealt with osCommerce before so got no ideas what to do. It would take some time for me to figure it out what to do and how to do it so it would be easier to hire someone to do it for me. I need to start making revenue with this site as the privious owner was doing so time is of the essence.
