menusplus
We sell mostly custom products that may be shipped from various locations, at various times depending on production time and in various quantities. Therefore I need the following features and have not been able to locate the information. 1. Ability to calculate UPS shipping rates, but not process the shipping since it will be dropped shipped. 2. Ability to calculate the shipping charge FROM different locations (warehouses) depending on the product. 3. Price breaks or pricing levels, and minimum order quantity, example: quantity of 25 to 49 price each would be $2.00, quantity of 50 to 99 would be $1.90 each. 4. Are there security modules/add-ons to keep from being hacked?
♥kymation
1. There is an available module that gets quotes from the UPS server. 2. Use the MVS addon. 3. Also an addon for quantity discounts. 4. Security is built in, but there are several addons available if you want to use them. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support. menusplus
Thank you for the information and reply. I noticed that the current version of OSCommerce is 2.3 and it seems that 3.0 is coming up. However a lot of the add-ons state they are for 2.2 and several years old, will they work with 2.3 and 3.0 when it comes out?
MrPhil
2.3.4 is the current version of osCommerce, and should be used for any new installation. Consider adding the "bootstrap" responsive kit, or wait until 2.3.5 or 2.4 comes out with that built in, to go responsive. Ignore 3.0 until something is actually released as a production-ready store -- it's been in the works for many years, and it could well be many more years before something is finalized. Some 2.2 add-ons will work with 2.3.4, but most won't. Some that will, never had their catalog entries updated to show that they work with 2.3, so not listing 2.3 is not a guarantee that it won't work there. However, almost any add-on that affects the user interface will need at least some modification, since 2.3's UI is quite different from 2.2 in that regard. If you see one you want to use, ask first if it is actually known to work.
menusplus
Where would I ask about a specific add-on, would I post it here in this forum? When will 2.3.5 or 2.4 be coming out? And when it does will all those add-ons be then out dated? Another question; it looks as though all these community add-ons are free, is this correct? ♥kymation
Most addons have a support thread in the forum. Look at the addon listing, or read the instructions in the download package for that addon to find the support thread. If all else fails, try Google. Nobody knows when the next version will be released or what will be in it. When it happens, most of the existing addons will still work with 2.3.5, and probably a smaller number with 2.4. There will be an upgrade path from the current version to the new release, so you can just upgrade a working store rather than replacing it. Yes, all of the addons in the addon section here are free. There are commercial addons as well, but you'll have to go elsewhere for those. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support. menusplus
So for a new installation at this time would I download 2.3.4 full version? When it says full, does this include the bootstrap or is that another download somewhere and installation? I will be doing this on a sub domain does it make any difference? Would there be any particular information I should consider with a sub domain? Also, if I started setting it up with the standard template would I be able to install a new template later? Or maybe the Minitemplatesys?
♥kymation
The 2.3.4 Full version is the official download. There is a Bootstrap version available here on the forum, but that is an unofficial release with limited addons available. Subdomains pose no additional problems. That should just work. osCommerce does not have a template system built in. Templates sold in other places are usually just modified versions of osCommerce, and most have very poor support. You would be better off making the changes yourself. If you do go with a template, check that it is for osC 2.3.4, and enquire about the level of support you will receive. menusplus
Thanks Jim for the information. What is the bootstrap add-on called for a responsive site?
♥kymation
Bootstrap is not an addon; it's a heavily modified version of osCommerce. The downloads, including the addons that are supported, are available here on the forum. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support. menusplus
Gold Download:https://github.com/g...v2.3.4-GOLD.zipEDGE: Gold + Extra Commits such as bugfixes:https://github.com/g...hive/master.zip I looked at the bootstrap information and I am assuming that I would use the "Gold Download"? From what is written it looks as though "EDGE" just has added information about the fixes, is this correct? I came across information stating: In the includes folder locate the configure.php file and change the file permissions to 4-4-4 or read-only. If I do this will I still be able to make changes to the template in order to, as you suggested setting up my own?
♥kymation
The Gold release is the stable version to use for live stores. The Edge version is experimental and should only be used by developers and those who are willing to fix any bugs it might have. Change the permissions on includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php once you have completed the installation. This is a security measure. You will see a warning message in your Admin if you fail to do this. You can temporarily change the permissions back if you need to change these files, but that is rarely necessary. menusplus
After installation if I rename the admin folder this will change the url of the login, correct? I am looking for added security as my WP site had hacking problems in the past, a real horror story!
♥kymation
You will be prompted to change the admin name during the install process. Do it then. It's possible to change the admin name later, but that involves manually editing the configure.php, and that should be avoided if possible. MrPhil
The idea with changing configure.php permissions is to make them Read-Only for PHP (and thus, the osC program). This reduces the chances that a programming error or hack can change or erase this file. The exact permissions needed will vary with how your server is set up (i.e., what user PHP runs as), but 444 is usually a safe bet. On a system where PHP runs in your group or as "other", 644 would still be safe (it would have only Read-Only access by PHP). You can still make it 444 to reduce the chance of you accidentally erasing or overwriting this important configuration information (or if PHP runs as "owner"). Naturally, if normal file permissions are something other than 644 (e.g., 604), you would want 404 instead of 444. Also, since configure.php contains your database password, you could consider removing "Read" permissions from anyone who doesn't need to see it, such as "other" users (but PHP still needs to read it). In general, for any directory or file, you grant the minimum permissions needed for access by those who need to access it.
menusplus
I understand that once I install I have the option to change/create the login and password. It is also my understanding that I would enter mydomain.com/admin to get to the login page in the future. However with this set up so can everyone else and from there it is a matter of guessing the username and password to hack my site. Which from my experience with programs for this is rather easy. So my question is; can I change the name of the admin file to something else and would this then change the login url? Example: I rename the admin file to "getlost" then the url to login would be "mydomain.com/getlost" I have a security program on my WP site that does this and I haven't had any problems with hacking since I installed it and made this change to the url. Previously I was running two other security programs and still being hacked.
♥kymation
Again, you change the admin location during the osCommerce install process. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support.
MrPhil
Yes, that's exactly what the intent is, so that /admin is no longer there, but named something else (hopefully) unguessable.
