osCommerce

The e-commerce.

I'm totally lost in how to upgrade. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

step 1, download the upgrade packages between your current version and up to the newest, apply them 1 after another starting with the one 1 version above yours.

step 2. download any add-on you want to use and read and follow the included install instruction

I've downloaded them. How do I apply them? (yes, I'm that lost)

They all come with step by step instructions included, so just read and follow those.

Hi, Basically you need to go through the instructions step by step. The first bit is all about what it does and what files will change, and what new files will be added. I find it helpful to copy (and select) and paste this list into a word doc, print it out and then tick off the changed and added files.

Essentially you have to find the file that you need to update, and then find the bit of code to change.

If you have never put any ad-ons on before, nor altered the origin program in any way,you should just be able to replace the necessary files with the ones in the update packages.

You can go to control panel on your host for this eg mine is www.mydomain.couk/cpanel enter log in and password and go to file manger then public html then catalog The files are there. match them to the name/position in your update and replace the ones that need changing. Then upload the new ones the appropriate directories (check carefully, there are duplicate names of file directories)

Running a botched up version of  osCommerce Online Merchant v2.3.4 bootstrap with the dresscode theme installed, numerous add-ons, terrible coding, terrible website, but will have to make do until I have made up for my losses and can risk shutting down for a couple of weeks while I start all over again. - I did not install my program but am endeavouring to fix it with your help.

Note: do NOT use Word to copy and paste into your store code files. It is likely to add formatting stuff that will corrupt the code. Kellie's suggestion was merely to print out the changes so you can follow along with 1) any manual changes you need to make, and/or 2) make sure any automatic installation ran correctly (check it).

Absolutely right MrPhil! The update info is actually pdf, and I did try and copy and paste a few bits of code (namely as I cannot recognise the code differences - I have a sort of dyslexia!) however, often the code 'words' were broken at the end of the line creating a space which then made the code unrecognisable. e.g action_recorder would read act ion_recorder (note the space!). So much easier if you have never changed anything and therefore just replace whole files - and ideally can understand the code!

My webhost actually decided to update OS Commerce for me so now I am trying to do the add ons. I tried once before the update and it didn't work. I uploaded the files where I think they belonged then deleted because it didn't work from what I saw. I am trying again today. Thank you for your replies. This is certainly a learning experience for me.
