storeweb88 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I have a site that I am building locally it has around 500,000 categories. Once I added the categories it now seems really slow. I have a section that repeats over and again in sub categoies. Example ford > f150 >> all the years > f250 >> all the years repeated >f350 chevy >model >> all the years repeated >model >> all the years repeated toyota >etc etc... Any pointers or suggestions would greatly be appreicated. maybe there is some other way to repeat the years? After adding all the years and other models I may end up with a million..
♥kymation Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Take a look at the Year-Make-Model addon. You should be able to get rid of most of those duplicate categories. Regards Jim See my profile for a list of my addons and ways to get support.
storeweb88 Posted January 17, 2014 Author Posted January 17, 2014 I looked at a few. The yum one being one. The other I was getting a error but it didn't have a database layout. The same problem is even with the other ones. I am still going to run into 500,000 rows of data... Evenutally I break down the all the way to part. And I keep getting where every car is repeating wheel. so I will have wheel inside my database 5,000 times. Then mirror section inside my database 5,000 times. But I guess there is no other way to do it.
♥bruyndoncx Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 you should not duplicate products, perhaps you should hire a professional for a few hours who can guide you to available contributions, or advise on a better way forward. KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON I do not use the responsive bootstrap version since i coded my responsive version earlier, but i have bought every 28d of code package to support burts effort and keep this forum alive (albeit more like on life support). So if you are still here ? What are you waiting for ?! storeweb88 Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Please understand I am not asking about products I am asking about categories. My only goal here was to be more efficient with the category layout. After I thought maybe I could use some of the same names over. But with the current layout that is a lot of rebuilding, and not in the current time frame or budget. Anyways I ended up building something on my own that grabs everything it puts in the category. As for making the site load quicker I have found multiple items after a 1 hour search. One of the biggest is rebuilding the category count with mysql and php, and then turning off the select (*) or turning off the show the amount in administrator side. My first ultimate goal of coming on here and asking a question was so I would get a answer and not have to waste 1 hour of time hunting through stuff. I was just trying to be more efficient. @bruyndoncx Please do not take this the wrong way by why...? Why would you say something like that? As for a professional your answer is bad no offense. Why would you put that? Do you know what open source is? Then it comes to the idea why even have a forum because we should all just hire professionals? I thought the point of the forum was to help each other. Spread ideas.. Work together with each other to create a better open source program. Spread the knowledge. For a open source program you sure do sound a bit greedy and want to be closed minded. Heres something for open source and helping. I'm going to help you by letting you know you should work a little harder on your answers, or maybe you should hire a professional so you can understand what this forum actually is for. Answers like that are inappropriate.
♥14steve14 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 You can use google to find answers that may have already been asked in these forums. There have been many posts on these forums asking the same or similar questions to yours. They do mainly require help with speeding up the sites which have large category numbers. Try a search and see what you get. People on these forums give their time freely, and will help and give advice where possible. Taking offense at an answer that you are given is a sure fire way to not get answers again. A professional website designer may have experience in how best to achieve what you are trying to do, so paying someone for a few hours work and advice would possibly get you aimed in the right direction, and it may be quicker than having to redo what you have already done. Had you also thought it through correctly you may have realised that large category numbers would be a problem, and you could have though of an alternative structure. It does sound as if you do need to reconsider the way that you are listing the products, which could reduce the number of categories that you have. There are several sites selling automotive parts that use oscommerce, so it must be possible. have you looked at the live sites area of the oscommerce website to have a look to see how others are doing it. Failing that there must be other sites that are similar to yours and they must have found a way to do it. Take a look at their sites and do something similar. Setting up any website will take time, and to be honest 1 hour on these forums is very low. I would like to think that by now you are fully aware that setting up a website will take time, and that it will not happen over night. Good luck with your project, and I hope that with a slight attitude change that you get the answer that you require. REMEMBER BACKUP, BACKUP AND BACKUP

Surely these should be considered as attributes or as Jim said specs ? regards Joli My advice is free !!!! To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.
Yesufashions Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Hello, I have a regular oscommerce site but my hosting keep saying I'm overloading their server. Can someone help me fix this. Here is what they said "The problem is related to the following query: select configuration_key as cfgKey, configuration_value as cfgValue from configuration; Which has been executed 258 times, which took 6128.413 sec for execution. You should check your application, which uses this database and figure out which part of it calls this query and optimize or disable it."
