New Spiders - lots of them for Burt's SID killer fix

Well, that's a decent point, brought up by HPDL himself several months ago. To provide the upmost in security, you should in fact require customers to have cookies turned on.

However, I honestly can't see turning ANY customers away. And it seems that the percentage of customers that purchase from my store that do not have cookies enabled is rising quickly. I do not want to lose ANY of those sales.

I would like to have an intermediate stage; instead of FORCE_COOKIE_USE, I would like to TRY_COOKIE_USE. Try to put a cookie on the customers machine. If it fails, put SIDs in the URLs. Not sure how well that works with spider bots. I don't know why they would object to cookies, but...

Chris,

As I understand Kaiser's suggestion, it is that it would be easier to check for good agents (IE, Opera, mozilla, Camino, Konqueror, etc.) that should get SIDs in the URL than to check for "bad" agents (search bots, etc.) that should not get SIDs in the URLs. Theory being that we are more likely to see a new search bot and have to make a change than a new browser that will force a change. Note: I wonder how this would affect AOL; isn't Check User Agent one of the Session settings that causes problems with AOL?

Kaiser,

I have only gotten booted when I hit a button (add reply or preview post), and I've had good luck with using the back button to get back to where I was entering the text. Then I can copy it to the clipboard and hit preview post. Sometimes, this shows that my post was actually made already. If not, I can hit reply again. If it still doesn't work, I've copied to a text file to save retyping later. May not be the same situation you faced, but it has worked for me in the past.

Hth,

Matt

P.S. I have noticed that the forums are busier than ever since the switch to IPB. Previously, the most people on at once had been about 75 (30+ being typical). Now, it's hitting 50 regularly and peaked at 168. In other words, the performance difficulties that we are seeing might have been even worse under phpBB, which was showing a marked slowness towards the end.

Well I will try to get some feedback once again.

I just installed Burt's SID Killer and I think that there is something wrong with my site. It just does not seem to be showing up correctly. My index page is HTML and there is a link to the store on that main page. The store is at prosportatv.com/shopcart. I do plan on putting a site map page in HTML linked off the main page to help target the store.

I tested the site with Sam Spade and a lot of weird stuff came up. When I used Sam Spade I used googlebot as the user-agent. Is this a good simulator.

I am running 2.2CVS. I have the Use-Search Engine Safe URL's set to true.

Can someone PLEASE take a look at my site and let me know what I am missing here?

Thanks,

Shawn

Well I think that this Sam Spade program is bogus. Either I am using it wrong or it does not work well. I did scan my site with search-engine-spider-simulator and the store turned out OK, I think. When I scan the main page (HTML) it shows all the html links but does not show the link to the store. I think this is because that link is in the header graphic that was done in Fireworks and uses a slice to link. I am not sure if the spiders would be able to pick up those type of links.

This is why I am planning on building a site map page (html) that houses links to all the products in the store with descriptions.

Would this help or improve how my site is setup and is viewed/indexed by the search engines.

Can someone please take a look at the site and throw some criticism my way? Be nice now. ;)

Thanks,

Shawn

You are quite mistaken about this program being bogus. It DEFINATELY works. Assuming you installed it correctly, the SID will be stripped away for any session that is created for a visitor matching your predefined list. Of course, if it is not installed properly, who knows what will happen.

I would suggest you install the "All Products" contribution to use as a map to your products. It seems search engine friendly, and it will save you coding all the HTML.

Thanks Mark for responding. I want to make sure that we are talking about the same program here. I was saying about Sam Spade might be bogus, not the DIS Killer. I just don't want us to be talking about 2 different things.

Anyway I followed the instructions that mattice put in this forum. But when I run it, it comes up with a bunch of code and no links. Here is an example of me running it on my store using googlebot as the agent:

I get the same results when I use Poodle Predictor also. This is kind of what I expected from Sam Spade. It seems like a cool program since you can apparantly mask yourself as any agent if you know the agent id.

I will look into the All Prods contribution. Thanks. I did hear though that search engines don't always like the basic links pages. Just what I have heard. I believe wizardsandwars was talking about this in another forum.

Thanks again

Thanks very much for the URLs, 'whatever', I didn't know them. If this is any indication then my website will be indexed very nicely indeed, it got all the links from my allproducts sitemap thingy.

Does anyone know how I can influence the body text that Google shows right under your clickable title int he search results? Because it is made out of the first lines of a page it always something along the line of "You are not logged in. Would you like to log in? Request an account" etc. Not nice.

The text that is shown by Google is dynamic depending upon what is being searched for, eg:

search for 'oscommerce' and you get this:

osCommerce, Open Source E-Commerce Solutions

... osCommerce is an online shop e-commerce solution under on going development by

the open source community. ... Latest News, 07/12, osCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2. ...

Search for 'oscommerce open source solutions' and you get this:

osCommerce, Open Source E-Commerce Solutions

... osCommerce combines open source solutions to provide a free and open e-commerce

platform, which includes the powerful PHP web scripting language, the stable ...

Description: A free online shop program featuring order history, shopping carts, full search capability, product...

Same result, same URL. Different text.

Jack,

What makes you think it's not working?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.

Jack,

What makes you think it's not working?

Search engine friendly URL's don't work with MS2 & SSL. If you turn them on, & try to checkout you end up with an empty shopping cart.

Jack,

What makes you think it's not working?

Search engine friendly URL's don't work with MS2 & SSL. If you turn them on, & try to checkout you end up with an empty shopping cart.

Actually you don't even need to turn on SEU's. It'll still fail at checkout.

Well, what USER AGENT is the spider simulator using? And is that USER AGENT in the list of USER AGENTS for known spiders?

M8,

Thanks a lot for ur response.

Where can i find this user-agent list ? I cant see any in my html_output.php. M using MS2. Do i need to copy burt's code into my html_output.php?

Please do advice. THanks.

BTW m8, i was curious to know where the 'search engine safe URL's' feature is working perfectly or not. I am not using SSL on my site so will it work for me perfectly?

Waiting for your response

Jack,

Try copying Burt's code into your html_output.php file. Run the spider simulator and see if it strips away the Sids. If it does, then you are fixed up. Obviously, if it causes errors, or does not strip away the SIds, you can always delete it and you are no worse off. This is a VERY easy modification. It shouldnt take you longer than 10 minutes to install it and test it with the spider simulator. This will clear up a lot of your questions. :D

Thanks a lot Mark. I think i've figured out this thing. I saw 1 spiders.txt file in includes folder which contained many spider's ID. I think this is the inbuild feature to kill SID's which MS2 possess. I would still add that code. I dont think it would create any problem as u have said.

BTW i was interested in the 'Search engine friendly URL's' feature. Does it works well?? I dont use SSL on my site.

Thanks again for ur reply

Warm Regards,

Jack

Ok, so we don't need to add anything to MS2 since the spider stuff is already in there by default. However, I'm still not clear on:

A) What is a User Agent

B) Why do I still have oscID's showing up when I test my pages

I'm php stupid. I'm practically internet stupid, but I would still like to be taught something new and useful :-)

Any takers?
