FeatherFantasy.com Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I am at such a loss of what to do. My web hosting company has disabled my shopping cart website saying that it is overloading their server. My son built this site for me in 2005 but passed away a few years ago, I am a small business limping along since his death, but this new problem is threatening the closure of my store. I don't have any idea where to go with this. I have tried blocking IP addresses that they said were overloading, then we did some other things they suggested (which was very hard for me to figure out). Now 3 weeks later, I am back in the same position. Where do I begin, and how do I update the os commerce shopping cart? Featherfantasy.com
burt Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I'd suggest removing the category box as it looks like it is drawing all the links on every page load. Go back to the standard menu, and cache it. You'll need to find the older menu, if you cannot find it, I can probably dig it out from somewhere. The cache setting is in your admin area (I cannot remember offhand exactly where).
Jack_mcs Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 @@FeatherFantasy.com When that happens it is almost always due to data skimmers and hackers. Since blocking the IP allowed it to run for a while indicates that was the problem. Blocking IP's will fix the problem again, for a short while, but they will keep coming. The best thing to do would be to block the entire country of any that are visiting the site so much. If your host has the maxmind package installed, it is an easy block. If not, it can still be done but can cause the .htaccess file to get quite large. But someone will have to review the logs to see which countries are at fault before action can be taken. FeatherFantasy.com Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 I appreciate the advice, I will see if I can put any of this into action. I am not all that good with the lingo of this.
FeatherFantasy.com Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 Is there an easy way to delete all the old orders, rather than doing them one at a time?
♥joli1811 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Hi Pattie if you go to your admin/ configuration/my store there is an option Show Category Counts change this to false as you do not need just a waste of resources will have a small effect but you have to start somewhere. Regards Joli PS: I really believe the best advice I could give you is to get a professional coder by posting in the commercial support section http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/forum/79-commercial-support-enquiries/ asking for a complete site upgrade to 2.3.3.4 (the latest version) ..... and to get the above problem with site overload fixed. if necessary also by considering changing the server. Asking for a quote does not cost anything!! The site is relatively simple and could be done in a few days you would the have your peace for the next years..... It does not have to cost an arm and a leg you may be pleasantly surprised at the actual costs you just have to believe in SANTA CLAUS :) To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.
FeatherFantasy.com Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 Joli, I have done the Admin change, and thank you for that information. I have also posted on the forum board, and I will wait to see what might happen with that. I am soi willing to help to the work, if I were to understand what was needed. Your help is so greatly appreciated. Your post made me smile, cute, and thank you.
Praful Kamble Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 @@FeatherFantasy.com Hi Pattie, Would like to recommend below things that you should go with - Leverage browser caching - Serve scaled images - Enable gzip compression - Minify CSS - Minify Javascript - Combine images using CSS sprites And use a cache system to overcome this issue. However, you might received an email from hosting TOC what query or part of code/script is causing the overload. If you can post that here, forum members can suggest you more on that. :) PS: Also check Google Analytic for concurrent users count at the time of overload reported. Jack_mcs Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 @FeatherFantasy.com While doing the things mentioned are helpful to a site, they won't solve the initial problem if it due to data skimmers. Fixing the actual problem should be the first thing to do. All of the others are minor patches and you will find yourself in the same situation once all of those changes are made, I'm afraid.
