Downside of not upgrading from 2.2ms2

Hi,

I have a live store running 2.2ms2 with many added contributions.

Upgrading or setting up a new store with 2.3.x seems a daunting task.

What is the downside of not upgrading.

The downside of not upgrading;

1. security. 2.3 series is much more secure

2. tables. 2.3 uses far far less tables to create the output

3. php version. At some point your 2.2 will break when the host upgrades his php version

4. mysql version. At some point your 2.2 will produce errors on some SQL commands

5. new features. 2.3 includes a lot of features that does not exist in 2.2

6. future development. No sane developer is making addons for 2.2

7. bugs. 2.2 is riddled with bugs, 2.3 is being constantly worked on to rid the bugs

8. theme development. Theming is far easier with 2.3 than it was with 2.2

There are more. Anyone else want to chime in?

In the very near future all hosts will be required to update their servers to PHP5.4, as php5.3 is apparently deemed insecure by PCI standards. Once your host goes 5.4, your old 2.2 will fail and it will fail spectacularly.

Advice: You should NOW with a new installation of 2.3.3.4 in a private subdirectory of your site, then add to it only the addons that you absolutely cannot do without, then reskin it to look better. If you put some graft into it, you could be up and running in very short order. Whatever you decide, you MUST keep on top of updates.

Another way this could be answer is: the downside of not upgrading your store is.... not having a store.

And as Murphy's Law states - "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". So for me, this would mean my host will upgrade PHP on the night before my "biggest sale, busiest day, with the most traffic" - and I would be S-O-L.

@@doon1947, I was in your shoes 12 months ago... I can happily say, I'm up and running since June on 2.3.3 and just did all the updates to 2.3.3.4. As a non programmer myself, yes, daunting for sure, but the only way to get to the end is to start.

I will never let my store get that far behind again...

You're going to put at least as much effort into keeping up with security patches and PHP upgrades as you will just biting the bullet and upgrading to osC 2.3.3.4.

Remember, your current stores does NOT have to go off the air while you get a 2.3.3.4 store up and running in a private /test directory. You also don't have to lose any existing data, as the database can be migrated to 2.3.3.4. Work on a separate copy of the store and the database, so you can make mistakes until you've got it figured out.

Some of your 2.2 MS2 add-ons you will no longer need. Some are available for 2.3.3.4. Some you will have to do without or port them to 2.3.3.4 (please contribute them back to the community). Same things go for any custom coding.

Very good points from everyone.

You have to look at maintaning your online store the same way you would a brick and mortar store. If your brick and mortar developed a roof leak, you would have to do the maintanance to fix it or risk getting your inventory wet.

I am convinced. Have started with a new copy of 2.3.1. and have chosen this version as Option Types 2.xx, my "must have" contribution runs on 2.3.1

I'm guessing it will not be a big deal to upgrade from OSC 2.3.1 to 2.3.4 - comments please

Thanks to all for your input.

He's afraid that his "must have" add-on won't work past 2.3.1. @@doon1947, you should check if Option Types 2.xx can be made to work with 2.3.3.4 or higher.

Yes I am afraid that "Option Types" will not work with 2.3.3.4. There is no upgrade for that OSC version, see:

If fact after reading the latest threads in the link above, there is some doubt whether Option Types 2.3.1 will work properly with OSC 2.3.1

Hi Al,

It does work with 2.31 but you need to read the support forum The only problem is the include /classes/shopping cart most people used the older version of shopping cart.php from the original contribution as it was hard to manually upgrade.

as for 2.3.3.4 really not sure have not tested but if need be should be possible to fix.

Use the version from dun web. But read the forums I think I used winmerge rather than relying on the install instructions

Hi

I'm also using Oscommerce 2.2-MS2. I want to hire a programmer which upgrade my shop to latest version. Because I don't want to trouble. Is there any person which can do it?

Thanks
