Ecommerce marketplace setup

Hi,

 

I am new to e-commerce development and was recently asked about setting up a marketplace where local businesses could sign up and sell their merchandise through one site. I have been looking around and haven't really found a good solution. Can this be done by the average web developer? Or is this something that a larger development team would need to handle?

 

I would like to use OS Commerce for this if it is possible. I have heard nothing but good things about this platform.

There are some older add-ons you could look at for a start, but nothing plug and play.
