SEO & Meta tags for Site Improvements

Don't expect <meta keyword> tags to be your salvation. Google and some other major search engines simply ignore them because they've been so abused in the past. If you do choose to use it, make sure it's honest (no black hat techniques or hijacking of terms) and reflects the content of the page. Otherwise, you could end up being penalized (especially by Google) and be in an even worse position than you are now. That said, use an add-on to provide you with that tag, rather than trying to figure it out yourself if you don't know PHP coding.

If you really want meta tags, I have used this contribution in the past =

Header Tags SEO V 3.0

Just a note:

Also include the keywords in the product description. Worked for me.

1- Meta keywords = 1990's stuff; pay no regard ...

2- Meta description and title, etc. ... http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/8864 or Jack always has good add-ons: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/5851

3- SEO friendly URLs (no strings, just key phrase ... but bear in mind the impact of these has been slightly reduced by Google's EMD (exact match domain) update along with Panda 1&2 and Penguin: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/2823 or whatever add-on OSC has these days for SEO friendly URLs ...

4- Avoid duplicate content penalties (choose www or no www; I prefer with www for a few reasons)

5- Make sure all of your images have alt tags

6- Leverage your browsing cache, specify cache validators, and handle your Etags ... google 'em or just go here: http://gtmetrix.com/recommendations.html and learn how to adjust your root's .htaccess file for improved speed (less page loading times = better on-page SEO)

7- Then your on-page SEO is mostly complete. On to the off-page SEO, which is much more time-consuming and more thorough.
