Installing Russian Language

Recommended Posts

One of our clients may be interested in adding Russian to their site. Is there anything that I need to know or be aware of when installing the Russian language package? Is it the same as if I were to add French or any other language? Thanks.

Just pay attention to the character encoding demanded by the Russian language files, and make sure it matches your database character encoding. If you're on osC 2.3, it should already be UTF-8 encoding, so just make sure the Russian files are also UTF-8 (which they should be if they are 2.3-compatible). If you're on osC 2.2, your database is likely still at Latin-1, which may or may not work quite right with Cyrillic text. The database will be able to store and retrieve text, but won't sort it correctly, and in Admin the Russian text will probably be displayed as accented Latin alphabetic characters. If you converted your osC 2.2 database to UTF-8 at some point, make sure the Russian language support files are UTF-8 and not Latin-5 or whatever Cyrillic is.
